Ford Teams Up With Volkswagen For EVs By 2023 — Ford To Use VWs MEB Platform
Ford and Volkswagen have announced that they will be expanding their global alliance which will now include electric vehicles (EVs). Also, they will be doing a massive investment in autonomous technology and joint development of commercial vehicles.
So the EV tie-up will see Ford use the Volkswagen's MEB platform to develop at least "one high-volume fully electric vehicle in Europe", which is expected to launch in 2023.
VW CEO Herbert Diess stated that there is a possibility of a second MEB-based model line in Ford's portfolio. He also mentioned that the next model could almost double the supply of the MEB components to Ford.
The MEB platform will not only launch vehicles by Volkswagen but cars from the VW-group, which will include Audi, SEAT, Skoda and more between 2019 and 2023. Ford will be the first announced automaker outside of the Volkswagen Group to make the use of the MEB platform. However, the carmaker has mentioned that there are plans for only one model at the present moment.
Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess made a statement about the development costs for zero-emissions vehicles saying, "this improves the position of both companies through greater capital efficiency, further growth, and improved competitiveness".
Also, Ford CEO Jim Hackett stated, "while Ford and Volkswagen remain independent and fiercely competitive in the marketplace, teaming up and working with Argo AI on this important technology allows us to deliver unmatched capability, scale, and geographic reach".
Thoughts On Ford and Volkswagen Collaboration For EVs
From wartime manufacturers to global automotive leaders, Ford and Volkswagen are two of the biggest players. With both of them partnering to create electric vehicles, one can expect phenomenal vehicles. We're excited to see what they bring to the game. Does this mean other players in the market need to worry? Who knows! Only time will tell.
