Ford Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 Sets Quarter Mile Record - Electric Pony Blisters Drag Strip
The Ford Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 has set a new NHRA quarter mile record for full-bodied EVs. The all-electric Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 is the upgrade to the Cobra Jet 1400 that was introduced in 2020.
The Super Cobra Jet 1800, broke the world record for the fastest quarter-mile pass with a full-bodied electric drag car with a blistering time of 7.759 seconds at 180.14mph (289.9km/h) at the National Hot Rod Association Winter Nationals in California last week.
The new Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800, which produces 1,800hp as its name suggests broke the record set by its predecessor. The Cobra Jet 1400, which weirdly enough produced 1,502hp, held the record with a quarter mile time of 8.128 seconds at 171.97mph (276.75km/h) back in 2021.
The Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 was built by Ford Performance with MLe Racecars, AEM-EV, Watson Engineering, and Cascadia Motion. The collaboration with MLe saw the development of a custom control strategy and a cutting-edge lightweight battery system.
The upgrade from 1400hp to 1800hp saw the electric Super Cobra Jet 1800 drag race demonstrator get a full "blank page" redesign of the battery system, to help get the 30 per cent increase in power.
The Ford Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 features two double-stacked DS-250-115 motors that still send power to the rear wheels of the all-electric drag racer. The motors combined with the four PN250DZR inverters have all been optimized for unprecedented launches and performance.
Add in the big loss in weight (the battery system is lighter by 40 per cent) compared to the Cobra Jet 1400, it comes as no surprise that the new Super Cobra Jet 1800 broke the quarter-mile NHRA record of its predecessor.
However, for Ford, the journey of the Super Cobra Jet 1800 is far from over. The blue oval brand wants to continue the journey until it achieves a future where "the roar of an engine can be as silent as it is powerful."
