Registration Charges For Both Two And Four Wheelers To Increase By 25 Times — Here’s Why!
The Indian government is looking at increasing the registration charges of petrol/diesel powered two and four-wheelers in the country. The charges for registration and renewal of registration will soon increase by up to 25 times.
According to Times Of India, once the new registrations charges are implemented, registering a petrol or diesel car will cost the owner Rs 5000 while the renewal of registration will cost Rs 10,000. Currently, both these charges are set at just Rs 600 each.
The reason for the increase in the registration amounts is to mainly discourage the purchase of petrol or diesel-powered vehicles while boosting the shift towards the use of EVs in the country.
The amendment to hike the registration charges is currently still in its drafting stage, which will be implemented sometime soon. According to the proposal, any vehicle including private cars, cabs and all two-wheelers running on conventional fuel will face a hike in their registration charges.
As per the proposal, registration of two-wheelers will be increased to Rs 1000 while its renewal will cost Rs 2000. Currently, the charges are fixed at Rs 50. Similarly, registration of cabs which are currently Rs 1000 will be increased to Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000 for registration and re-registration, respectively.
That is not all, even imported vehicles will face a registration hike from the current Rs 5,000 to Rs 40,000. Commercial LMVs will face a hike from Rs 1000 to Rs 10,000 for registrations and Rs 20,000 for renewals.
An official stated, "We have sought feedback from all stakeholders before notifying the final fee structure in the next 40 - 45 days."
Apart from the increase in the registration amounts of petrol or diesel-powered vehicles, the Indian government is also looking at a proposal to scrap all vehicles older than 15-years — here are all the details.
Thoughts On The Hike In Registration Charges
The Indian government is pushing hard to encourage the shift towards electric vehicles in the Indian market. The government is also taking every possible action to improve the sales of EVs in India. It will be interesting to see how people will react to the hike in registration amounts when the proposal is actually implemented.
