Jeep Compass Vs Tata Safari Comparison — Has The Old Made Way For The New?
Here is the comparison between Jeep Compass and the Tata Safari.
After months of speculations, Jeep has announced the price of the Compass in India. The pricing of the Jeep Compass is quite aggressive which retails from Rs 14.95 lakh to Rs 20.65 lakh ex-showroom (India).
With 5,000 bookings, the Jeep Compass has caught the attention of many Indian buyers. What Jeep has done is that it has positioned the Compass at a price range which tempts buyers to push their budget slightly higher.
The Tata Safari, which spearheaded the SUV segment in India, continues to be a choice among SUV enthusiasts in the country.
So how does the Tata Safari compare to the Jeep Compass?

Let us compare the Jeep Compass with the Tata Safari to understand better how they are rated regarding design, price, features, safety and specifications.
Design
The Jeep Compass shares a lot from its elder sibling Grand Cherokee. The iconic 7-slat Jeep front grille along with the masculine clamshell bonnet leaves a lasting impression of the Compass.
On the side, the flared wheel along with the shark fin rear D-Pillar makes you feel that the Compass is a proper SUV.
The Tata Safari is 20 years old, but Tata Motors has periodically tweaked the design to suit the trend and the current re-designed model is known as Safari Storme. The front honeycomb grille is inspired from the now discontinued Land Rover Freelander 2.
On the side, the thick and protruding plastic cladding, which is quite old and boring to look at, on the side, the Safari Storme is similar to the previous model's SUV design language. On the rear, the Safari Storme is a lot more chiselled along with modern looking clear lens taillights.
Compared the Jeep Compass, the Safari lacks the character. Tata Motors should look to overhaul the Safari and introduce the next-generation model as early as possible.
As for the interiors, the Jeep Compass boasts a long list of features but falls short of styling; the sombre looking dashboard might not be liking to many. The Compass comes with Ski-grey leather seat upholstery which adds a premium touch to the SUV.
Inside the Tata Safari, the dual-tone black silver dashboard is the only saving grace of the SUV. But the lack of touchscreen display and the simple layout of the controls leave you wanting for more.
Overall Design Rating
- Jeep Compass 8/10
- Tata Safari 7/10
Engine Specifications & Gearbox
The Jeep Compass petrol model is powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine producing 160bhp and 250Nm of torque, mated to either to a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic gearbox.
The Jeep Compass diesel model is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine which develops 171bhp and 350Nm of torque and comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Jeep offers both the 4x2 and 4x4 option on the diesel model of the Compass, but the petrol model comes only with the 4x2 option.
The Tata Safari is powered by the 2.2-litre VARICOR engine and comes in two different states of tune. The VARICOR 400 produces 154bhp and 400Nm of torque and comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and is a 4x4 model.
The VARICOR 320 churns out 148bhp and 320Nm of torque and comes paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox. There is no petrol engine on offer for the Safari.
The Jeep Compass is way ahead, and Safari needs to catch up before it is considered a dead model from Tata Motors.

- Tata Safari 6.5/10
Features
No doubt the Jeep Compass is light years ahead of the current Tata Safari in terms of features. The Compass is off-road ready with its Selec-Terrain options to tweak the performance based on the driving conditions.
While the Compass comes with touchscreen infotainment system which can be connected to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Dual-Zone Auto A/C among others, the Safari lacks the lustre it requires in the segment it competes although it boasts of ConnectNext music system by Harman with six speakers.

- Tata Safari 7/10
Safety
The Jeep Compass comes equipped with a host of safety features which include 6-airbags, ABS and ESP along with Panic Brake Assist, Hydraulic Booster Failure Compensation, Electronic Brake Prefill, and Electronic Roll Mitigation and Hill Start Assist.
As for the Tata Safari features, the SUV comes with dual front airbags and ABS with EBD along with other insignificant safety features like reverse parking sensors, side impact bars among others.
The Tata Safari is ageing and needs to catch with the newer lot immediately to keep itself relevant in the Indian market.
Overall Safety Rating

- Tata Safari 6/10
Pricing
Jeep Compass | Rs 14.95 lakh to Rs 20.65 lakh |
Tata Safari | Rs 9.79 lakh to Rs 14.47 lakh |
Verdict
The Tata Safari lacks in most of the department be it the old school design, engine options, or even the lack of features. The Jeep Compass is new and modern with the latest in technology, safety, features and more.
However, if you are looking for a full-size SUV and not interested in taking your SUV off-roading along with a budget of Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh, then the Safari could be your choice.
