The Tata Altroz is the brand’s first premium hatchback in the Indian market. The new Altroz comes with a completely new design, part of Tata Motors’ new ‘Impact 2.0’ design language. The Altroz is the second product after the Harrier to receive the new design language. The premium hatchback is also the first product from Tata Motors to feature the company’s new ‘ALFA’ architecture.
Starting from the front, the Tata Altroz features a sloping bonnet with a blacked-out grille up front. This is flanked on either side by a pair swept-back projector headlamps, along with a thin strip of chrome running across the width of the front fascia; adding to the premium appeal.
The LED DRLs are positioned slightly below the main headlamp cluster in a separate housing. Further down is a large air intake positioned at the centre of the front bumpers. Both the grille and the air intake are finished in black, giving it a sporty look.
The side and rear profile on the Tata Altroz is characterised by the upswept window line, flared wheel arches housing the 16-inch laser-cut dual-tone alloy wheels. The rear comes with little to no chrome elements, instead it features blacked-out elements on the boot with smoked taillights at either end.
Moving into the cabin of the Tata Altroz, the premium hatchback features a well laid out dashboard with a large central touchscreen infotainment system, semi-digital instrument cluster and a host of other features as well.
The Tata Altroz is offered with a choice of two engine options. This includes a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine producing 82bhp at 6000rpm and 113Nm of peak torque at 3300rpm. The other engine is a 1.5-litre Revotorq diesel unit, churning out 90bhp at 4000rpm and 200Nm of peak torque at 1250rpm to 3000rpm.
Both engines have been updated to comply with the latest BS6 emission regulations and are mated to a standard five-speed manual gearbox. Tata Motors is currently not offering an automatic transmission on the Altroz, but could introduce it at a later stage.
Tata Motors claims that the Altroz offers an ARAI-certified mileage figure between 15km/l to 20km/l on the petrol and diesel engines. However, real-world fuel efficiency figures will vary depending on various external factors.
Tata Motors has packed the Altroz with a host of features and equipment across all its variants. Some of the key features on offer include mood lighting, metal-finish interior door handles, LED headlamps, LED DRLs and taillights, automatic climate control, 90-degree opening doors, electronically adjustable and folding ORVMs, wearable key, fabric seats with 3D embossed upholstery, cooled glove box and customisable infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility; to name a few.
Safety features on the Tata Altroz: dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, auto headlamps, corner stability control, anti-glare IRVMs, cruise control, engine immobiliser, reverse parking sensors and camera and high-speed alert system to name a few.
The Tata Altroz is an impressive offering from the brand in the Indian market. The engines perform well, while also offering a sporty design and a host of premium features. Being the first car in the premium hatchback segment from Tata Motors, the Altroz looks poised to take on its rivals.
