After months of speculations, Jeep has finally revealed the price of the Compass in India. Priced aggressively, the Jeep Compass is available from Rs 14.95 lakh to Rs 20.65 lakh (pan India).

While the Jeep Compass is technically superior to the Mahindra XUV500, the price range is quite tempting to choose the American brand. But the Mahindra XUV500 has carved a niche for itself with its well-balanced pricing and features.

So how does the Jeep Compass compare to the Mahindra XUV500? Let us compare the Jeep Compass with the Mahindra XUV500 to understand how they are rated regarding design, price, features, safety and specifications.

Design

The Jeep Compass highlights the Jeep DNA and resembles its bigger sibling, the Grand Cherokee. Also, the Compass looks more like a proper SUV.

Up front, the clamshell bonnet with a slight bulge at the centre is masculine. The iconic 7-slat grille finished in gloss black, and chrome surround gives the Jeep Compass a distinctive design, and this is well suited with the Iron Man inspired projector headlamps with LED DRLs.

On the side, the Compass SUV is accentuated with flared square wheel arches and the shark fin rear D-Pillar leaves an enduring impression with the LED taillights.

Home-grown Mahindra's flagship model, the XUV500 is one of the best-looking SUV from the company's product lineup. The Mahindra XUV500 with its 5-slat grille along with the sharp creases of the front bumper is intimidating with its road presence.

The rounded wheel arches and with the cheetah inspired design language; the Mahindra XUV500 stands out between the two, In fact, the Mahindra XUV500 is taller and wider than the Jeep Compass.

Inside the Jeep Compass, the SUV feels a bit dull and the design approach is practical, and Jeep has not experimented too much with the styling. The Mahindra XUV500 is spacious, but the quality of plastic is not top notch. But among the two, the Mahindra XUV500 can seat seven while the Jeep Compass can seat five.

Engine Specifications & Gearbox

Jeep Compass is offered in both petrol and diesel engines. The petrol Jeep Compass is powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged unit churning out 160bhp and 250Nm of torque, which will be mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic gearbox and the power is sent to the front wheels.

As for the diesel model of the Jeep Compass, it is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine which produces 171bhp and 350Nm of torque and comes paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Jeep is offering both the 4x2 and 4x4 on the diesel model of the Compass, while the petrol model is offered only with the 4x2 option.

The Mahindra XUV500 is powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine with 140bhp and 330Nm paired either to a 6-speed manual or an automatic gearbox. It does get a four-wheel drive layout as well; however, misses out on a petrol engine.

Also, the Jeep Compass is equipped with the Selec-Terrain system that comes with different modes - Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud, which tunes the performance of the SUV accordingly.

Features

The Jeep Compass comes with 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Compass SUV also boasts of reverse parking sensors; steering wheel mounted controls, Dual-zone auto A/C among others.

The Mahindra XUV500 is loaded with technology and features including the electric sunroof, auto A/C, Mahindra Blue Sense, Voice messaging system, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) among others. The XUV500 though does not support Apple CarPlay.

Safety

The Jeep Compass is equipped with safety features such as 6-airbags, ABS and ESP along with Panic Brake Assist, Hydraulic Booster Failure Compensation, Electronic Brake Prefill, and Electronic Roll Mitigation and Hill Start Assist.

The Mahindra XUV500 comes with safety features including six airbags, ABS with EBD; ESP, Hill Hold and Hill Descent Control as well as disc brakes for all four tyres. The XUV500, which is priced lower than Compass, offers most of the important safety features comparatively.

Verdict

The Jeep Compass can seat five in comfort all the while taking the off-roading route without any tussle. The Mahindra XUV500 is more of a people carrier with an SUV outlook. With a starting price of Rs 14.65 lakh going up to Rs 20.65 lakh, the Jeep Compass has a slight advantage over the Mahindra XUV500, which needs an urgent facelift or probably a new-generation to compete with the American brand.
