Tesla Cars With ‘Autopilot’ In Three Years, Says Elon Musk
The ambitious and radical entrepreneur and Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk has shown his love for science fiction. But the fact that he dares to envision it sets him apart. His Hyperloop futuristic transport system and Iron Man style holographic 3D user interface are proof of the fact. It is not surprising then when you hear that Musk now wants to bring autonomous driving to his Tesla electric cars.
Musk prefers to use the term ‘Autopilot' instead of ‘autonomous driving'. Of course he does. Once again, what sets Tesla apart from the other automakers is, Elon plans on introducing Autopilot by 2016, while other automakers will not be bringing it before 2020.
Elon Musk, who conveyed his plans to the Financial Times, said Tesla's ‘Autopilot' unlike autonomous driving demonstrated by others, will not be a total takeover by computers. Instead, it will be partial, with 90 percent under computer control. The remaining 10 percent will still have to be managed by the driver. It is not clear how exactly such a task sharing will actually work out.
Torquenews even found some Tesla job listings looking for RADAR engineers who "has 3-10 years of design and release responsibility on sensors (Radar, Cameras, Lidar, and Ultrasound)/active safety systems. This engineer will be responsible for translating Tesla's autopilot roadmap into active safety features and into requirements. The engineer will actively drive the features into production and evaluate future technologies."
These are the initial days of self driving cars and more than the technological barriers it is the legal barriers that will be harder to pass before the tech can enters mainstream. Other companies that are known to be working on self driving car technology include Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Volvo and search giant Google.
