Nissan Says Production Autonomous Cars Will Be Reality By 2020
There are reportedly 6 million motor vehicle crashes in the US every year, costing $160 billion worth of damage. Road accidents are also the top reason of death for people between 4 and 34 years old and 93 percent of these accidents are caused due to human error, mostly inattention.
Nissan believes the solution to this problem is ‘Autonomous Drive'. The Japanese automaker has promised that production versions of its autonomous cars will become mainstream by 2020. The company says Autonomous Drive will be applied across its model range within the next two generations of vehicles and it will be offered at realistic prices for buyers.

The automaker has been working on developing the technology for the past several years with renowned educational institutions from around the world. At present it is constructing a dedicated proving ground in Japan featuring real townscapes - masonry not mock-ups. "It will be used to push vehicle testing beyond the limits possible on public roads to ensure the technology is safe," states Nissan.
One technology Nissan's Autonomous Drive makes use of is "Safety Shield". This system utilises cameras to get a 360 degree view around the car and detects risks and warns the driver. In an emergency it is also capable of taking appropriate action on its own. Nissan Autonomous Drive capabilities are being demonstrated for the first time at Nissan 360 in South California.

The system, Nissan says, will be perfectly capable of navigating long distances without use of a map. It would also be possible to incorporate the system in cars with in-car navigation system.
"Nissan Motor Company's willingness to question conventional thinking and to drive progress - is what sets us apart," said CEO Carlos Ghosn. "In 2007 I pledged that - by 2010 - Nissan would mass market a zero-emission vehicle. Today, the Nissan LEAF is the best-selling electric vehicle in history. Now I am committing to be ready to introduce a new ground-breaking technology, Autonomous Drive, by 2020, and we are on track to realize it."
