Volvo Autonomous Parking Turn Chauffeurs Redundant

By Ganesh

Volvo V40 Cross Country, recently launched in India, comes with Park Assist. This convenience feature parks the vehicle, to a large extent, on its own. But the driver is still required to be present in the car throughout.

Volvo wants to take Park Assist feature one step further by introducing auto parking. This would mean the driver can get out of the car and command it to drive off in search of a parking slot and safety park itself, using a smartphone application. What's more, the car can even be summoned from the parking area to pick up its owner. In short, the technology Volvo is developing is an invisible electronic chauffeur.

The Swedish automaker has in fact, already fitted a test car - a Volvo V40 - with the technology that demonstrates auto parking without a single awkward moment. Considering that prototype driverless cars are common these days, autonomous parking may seem like a relatively easy feet. But there is a difference between the two. Volvo says, auto parking feature is closer to production than we might think.

Volvo's auto parking feature does use technology developed for autonomous cars and also several of Volvo's road safety features such as child detection and auto braking. Watch the short video below of the Volvo V40 test car in action. At the end of it you will be left with a smile on your face.
