Maruti Suzuki is all set to replace its old tried and tested 1.3-litre DDiS 200 diesel engine with their all-new power unit. The new unit will be a larger 1.5-litre DDiS225 engine and will debut next month on the Ciaz sedan.
The new 1.5-litre diesel unit has been developed in-house by Maruti Suzuki and is said to be ready for production. Maruti will first introduce it on the Ciaz, before expanding it to other models such as the new Ertiga as well.
We had already reported the specifications of the new diesel engine, earlier. The new engine will be a 1,498cc four-cylinder DDiS225 unit producing 94bhp at 4,500rpm and 225Nm of torque at 1,500rpm. The new 1.5-litre diesel engine is also said to be highly fuel efficient, returning a claimed mileage of 26.82km/l.
The new engine will be BS-IV compliant at the time of its debut, however, Maruti will update the unit to be BS-VI compliant at a later stage. The Indian government has mandated that all engines should be BS-VI compliant from April 2020.
Maruti Suzuki stated that the new diesel engine is BS-IV compliant mainly due to the costs involved. The upgrade to a BS-VI engine would require additional components, making it almost Rs 1.5 lakh more expansive. This would indirectly increase the cost of the Ciaz and other product offerings from the brand.
Currently, Maruti Suzuki is using a 1.3-litre DDiS200 diesel unit producing 89bhp and 200Nm of torque. This engine will not be upgraded to the upcoming BS-VI norms, however, will be on sale along with the new engine till the 2020 deadline, before being discontinued.
Maruti Suzuki recently introduced its new 1.5-litre four-cylinder K15-Series petrol engine. This new engine was debuted with the Ciaz facelift and is now available on the new Ertiga MPV as well.
Apart from the new diesel engine roll-out, Maruti Suzuki is preparing for the launch of their new Wagon R hatchback in the Indian market. The new Maruti Wagon R 2019 will be launched on the 23rd of January. Ahead of its launch, Maruti Suzuki has released a number of teaser videos, showcasing details of the upcoming tall boy hatchback — watch all the teaser videos here.
