Toyota And Suzuki To Introduce Electric Vehicles In India

The newly signed MoU is based on the agreement to form a partnership in India which was signed in February 2017. The MoU states that Suzuki will manufacture electric vehicles and Toyota will provide technical support.

Both Toyota and Suzuki will also conduct a detailed study for the acceptance and use of electric vehicles in India. The study includes concerns about setting up charging stations and human resource for after-sales service of EVs.

In a bid to shift to electric vehicles in India, Suzuki has already announced that it will set up a lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant in Gujarat. The automaker is expected to locally manufacture and source all the components which include battery, electric motor and other essential components.

But the major challenge for electric vehicles in India is the charging infrastructure. The other key factor for the success of EVs in India is the pricing. Suzuki is trying to locally-source all the components which will help in keeping the price down.

Toyota and Suzuki become the latest firms to develop electric vehicles for the Indian market. The companies will launch the EVs in the country in 2020. India is planning to shift to pure electric vehicles by 2030 and Toyota and Suzuki is well prepared for the challenge. But with the charging infrastructure still in development, the EVs might face a tough challenge.
