Top 10 Best Selling SUVs In The World In 2016
Honda managed to fight off competition and the CR-V managed to sell more than three-quarter million, while the SUV segment grew 27 million in worldwide sales with a share of 26 percent of total sales.
The SUV segment has been toast of the season in 2016, be it compact, crossovers or the true blue SUVs. The segment was the fastest growing globally in 2016 with record sales of 27.1 million units.
Of the total vehicle sales in the world in 2016, SUV segment grew an impressive 20.2 percent and grabbed the market share of 26 percent. There was an intense fight for the top rank in the best-selling SUVs in the world in 2016.
Here are the top 10 selling SUVs in the world in 2016:
10. Ford Escape
Ranked 7th in 2015, the Ford Escape fell down the list with 10th in 2016. Ford was able to sell 371,133 units compared to 372,601 in 2015. There was a marginal decrease in sales of 0.4 percent comparatively.
The Ford Escape received a 5-star rating in its crash safety test is powered with the choice of three motors. The options include 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine, 2.0-litre EcoBoost mill and the 2.5-litre iVCT engines. All these motors are paired with the 6-speed automatic gearbox.
9. Nissan Rogue
Nissan Motor Co. had a solid 2016 in sales and has grown rapidly globally. One of the best performers for the company was the Rogue which sold 373,436 units in 2016 and grew by 14.2 percent. The Nissan Rogue moved up the ranking from 11th to 9th this year.
Nissan has powered the Rogue with the 2.5-litre DOHC four-cylinder unit as standard across variants. The company also offer the option of a hybrid powertrain which is a 2.0-litre DOHC four-cylinder unit with a 40bhp electric motor adding power the SUV. The motors are paired to the CVT gearbox.
8. Nissan X-Trail
Another Nissan SUV in the top 10 selling SUVs in the world in 2016 is the evergreen X-Trail. Despite an increase of 8 percent growth in 2016, the X-Trail fell from 5th to 8th in 2016. The company sold 412,729 units compared to 382,082 units in 2015.
Nissan introduced the X-Trail back in 2000 and has been one of the best-selling vehicles for the company. The company offers the X-Trail in 140bhp 2.0-litre and 228bhp 2.5-litre petrol engines. There is also a diesel powertrain which is a 130bhp 1.6-litre mill. The hybrid version of the X-Trail is available in Japan.
7. Nissan Qashqai
The Qashqai is the best-selling SUV in this list for Nissan. Nissan sold 449,520 units of the Qashqai compared to 357,115 in 2015, thereby registering growth of 25.9 percent. The Nissan Qashqai SUV moved from 10th rank to 7th in 2016.
Nissan Qashqai is a crossover SUV and has been in production from 2006. Currently the third generation Qashqai is in production and comes with options of five different powertrains. This includes 1.2-, 1.6- and 2.0-litre petrol units, while the diesel motors are 1.5- and 1.6-litre engines. The gearbox duty is taken care by either the 6-speed manual or the CVT automatic transmission.
6. Kia Sportage
The Kia Sportage is a compact SUV produced by the South Korean manufacturer since 1993. The Sportage is in its third generation and has the underpinnings of the Hyundai Tucson, Hyundai is theparent company of Kia Motors. The company sold 492,666 units in 2016 registering growth of 9.3 percent.
The 5-door Kia Sportage comes with different powertrain options which include1.6-, 2.0- and 2.4-litre petrol engine. The diesel unit is a 1.7-litre turbocharged unit. The gearbox on offer is the 6-speed manual or the automatic as well as a 7-speed DCT automatic gearbox.
5. Volkswagen Tiguan
Volkswagen has taken the title of the largest automobile manufacturer in 2016 from Toyota. The Tiguan is a compact crossover SUV and was introduced in 2007 globally. The company sold 519,656 units compared to 505,789 units in 2015, registering 2.7 percent growth. The Tiguan though fell from 3rd rank to 5th compared to the previous year.
The second generation VW Tiguan is ready for production and the company is offering Short Wheelbase (SWB) and Long Wheelbase (LWB), the former will be for Europe and the latter will be offered in Europe, North America, China and other markets.
4. Haval H6
The Haval H6 is known as the Great Wall Haval H6, a compact SUV, built by Chinese manufacturer Great Wall Motors since 2011. Currently, the Haval H6 is the best-selling SUV in China. Globally it sold 580,683 units compared to 373,229 units in 2015 registering a solid 55.6 percent growth.
The company sells the Haval H6 in China and in Europe. The Haval H6 is powered by three different powertrains: 1.5- and 2.4-litre petrol units, while the diesel motor is a 2.0-litre engine. The motors are paired with either the 5-speed or the 6-speed manual gearbox, while the automatic is a 4-speed transmission.
3. Hyundai Tucson
The biggest performer in this list is the Hyundai Tucson with sales of 639,053 units up from 304,092 units in 2015. The company registering sales growth of 110.2 percent of the Tucson SUV.
The Hyundai Tucson is a compact crossover SUV manufactured since 2004. Currently, it is in its third generation and was recently launched in India. Globally, Hyundai is offering the Tucson in 1.6-, 2.0-litre petrol engines, while the diesel units are offered in 1.7- and 2.0-litre engines. The gearbox duties are taken care either with the 6-speed automatic or the 7-speed DCT transmissions.
2. Toyota RAV4
Toyota came very close to take top honours by selling 723,988 units compared to 662,046 units in 2015. The company registered growth of 9.4 percent compared to the previous year, holding to the second position in the top 10 best-selling SUVs in the world in 2016.
The Toyota RAV4 is a compact crossover SUV, making its debut first in Japan and Europe in 1994. The RAV4 is in its fourth generation and comes with various options on the powertrain front. Toyota offers 2.0- and 2.5-litre petrol units, 2.2-litre diesel unit and a 2.5-litre hybrid petrol unit.
1. Honda CR-V
Honda cleared past Toyota RAV4 by selling 752,670 units compared to 711,571 units in 2015, registering growth of 5.8 percent. Despite a small percentage growth, the company managed to sell more than the Toyota RAV4. By selling a little more than three-quarter million units, the CR-V hit a milestone of a new all-time record for an SUV.
Honda unveiled the fifth generation in October 2016 in Detroit and sales have begun from December 2016 as 2017 models. The Japanese company is offering the new CR-V in two powertrains, 2.4-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol unit and comes mated to the CVT automatic gearbox.
