Tesla Model Y L Revealed - A Model X With Normal Doors?
Earlier this year, Tesla rolled out the refreshed Model Y to internatioal markets. The firm's smaller SUV was also its vehicle of choice for its arrival in India where it was launched at a starting price of Rs 59.89 lakh
Tesla is now getting ready to introduce a new variant of its popular Model Y, designated as the Model Y L, where "L" denotes its extended "Long" wheelbase. The Model Y L is set to launch in China this fall.
Initial glimpses of the extended wheelbase Tesla SUV emerged through documents submitted to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) details of which were posted by Tycho de Feijter on X along with images of the extended EV. The Tesla Model Y L comes equipped with three rows of seating, enhancing its appeal with more interior space and it also boasts extra power to deal with its extended proportions.
The Model Y L extends its dimensions and capabilities beyond the standard Model Y. It boasts a length of 4,976mm, making it 186mm longer, and stands 44mm taller than its counterpart. This increase in size is attributed not to just an elongated body but to a stretched wheelbase, which now measures 3,040mm, marking a 150mm increase which facilitates the addition of a third row of seats.
In terms of performance, this elongated Model Y L variant surpasses the standard Model Y. The new Model Y L houses dual electric motors—one on the front axle delivering 142 kilowatts and another on the rear with 198 kW. This configuration results in a combined output of 340 kW or 456 horsepower, aligning it closely with the power levels of the pre-facelift Model Y Performance model.
The extra power should help the new Model Y L as it is 167 kg heavier than the regular Model Y, tipping the scales at 2,088 kg. It also features larger tires at the rear and utilizes lithium-ion (NCM) batteries sourced from LG Energy Solutions. This marks a departure from the LFP chemistry lithium-ion batteries provided by CATL in the standard Model Y, indicating a shift in battery technology and supplier.
