Maruti Suzuki has discontinued the 1.3-litre diesel engine on their Ertiga MPV in the Indian market. The discontinuation of the Maruti Ertiga 1.3-litre diesel variant is due to the engine's non-compliance with the upcoming emission norms in India.
The 1.3-litre diesel engine was sourced from FCA and was the engine of choice for most diesel-powered Maruti Suzuki vehicles in the country. However, Maruti recently introduced their in-house developed all-new 1.5-litre diesel unit, which has been replaced on most of the brand's models.
The new 1.5-litre diesel engine offers better power output, is more efficient and can also be easily updated to comply with the upcoming BS-VI emission norms. The new 1.5-litre first debuted on the Ciaz sedan, before being introduced on the popular MPV offering recently.
The engine comes in the form of a 1.5-litre four-cylinder DDis225 unit churning out 95bhp and 225Nm of torque.
There were reports earlier that Maruti Suzuki will be completely discontinuing production of diesel engines from April 1st, 2020. However, with depending on the demand for the diesel variants, Maruti Suzuki is expected to evaluate the need to upgrade the 1.5-litre unit to BS-VI at a later stage.
Maruti Suzuki already offers a BS-VI compliant petrol engine on the Ertiga, making it the first MPV in the country to be compliant with the upcoming emission norms.
The new BS-VI compliant petrol engine will come in the form of a 1.5-litre K15 series unit producing 104bhp and 138Nm of torque. This engine comes mated to a five-speed manual or a four-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
Maruti Suzuki is currently working on introducing a more premium version of the Ertiga MPV, called the XL6. The new Maruti XL6 will be new six-seater premium MPV, expected to launch on the 21st of August. Bookings for the Maruti XL6 MPV is now open — here are the details.
Thoughts On The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Diesel Discontinued
The Maruti Ertiga 1.3-litre diesel has been on sale in India for quite a long time. The 1.3-litre diesel unit did duty on not only the Ertiga but also a number of other models in the brand's lineup. However, the old engine fails to comply with the upcoming norms and hence is confirmed to be discontinued entirely, closer to the BS-VI emission deadlines.
