Maruti Discontinues Production Of Alto 800 — Maruti Builds Anticipation For Next-Gen Alto

Maruti Alto 800 production discontinued. Maruti Suzuki has stopped production of the Alto 800 in the Indian market. The car will however continue to remain on sale until stocks last.

The Maruti Alto 800 is one of the best-selling entry-level hatchback models in the Indian car segment. The hatchback was first introduced back in 2000, although the car was in production in India since 1994, mainly for export purposes. Over the years, the hatchback has undergone through a number of iterations, receiving a host of updates and changes.

However, with the upcoming stringent crash test norms and the emission norms of 2020, Maruti has decided to discontinue all models with the 800cc engine; including the Maruti Omni. Maruti is currently working on the next-generation Alto model for the Indian market.

The new Maruti Alto will not only comply with the upcoming crash test norms, but will also feature a completely new design and receive a number of latest features seen on some of the other newer Maruti Suzuki models.

The new Maruti Alto will be based on the Future-S concept showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. It will carry forward a similar SUV-type stance, similar to its competition, the Renault Kwid. The new Maruti Alto 800 has been spotted testing in India on multiple occasions, which although highly camouflaged confirms the SUV-type stance of the entry-level hatchback.

The current generation Maruti Alto 800 brought in volume sales to the brand in India. It is powered by a 793cc three-cylinder petrol engine producing 48bhp and 69Nm of torque. It is also available with a factory-fitted CNG variant which churns out 40bhp and 60Nm of torque. Both variant are mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

In 2014, Maruti Suzuki also introduced the Alto K10 powered by a larger 1.0-litre unit. The Maruti Alto K10 will continue to remain in production and sales until the launch of the next-generation Alto hatchback.

Thoughts On The Maruti Alto 800 Production Discontinuation

The Maruti Alto 800 has been leading the top-selling charts for over a decade now, with little to no competition. The Alto has also recorded consistent sales in the market year-on-year, with most customers, being first-time car buyers. The new Maruti Alto is expected to be launched sometime later this year, around July-2019. Once the new Maruti Alto is launched, it will continue to rival the likes of the Renault Kwid and the Datsun GO.
