Hyundai Venue Vs Ford EcoSport Vs Tata Nexon — Which Will Come Out On Top?

The Hyundai Venue is the latest entrant in the sub-four-metre compact-SUV segment of the Indian market. The Hyundai Venue is also the first compact-SUV from the brand in India and positioned below the Creta in the market.

The Hyundai takes on some serious competition in the highly-popular compact-SUV segment in the market. Here we pit the Hyundai Venue against the likes of the Ford EcoSport and Tata Nexon to find out which compact-SUV comes out on top (on paper). We have also put the Venue against the Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Mahindra XUV300 — here is the detailed comparison between them.


Off the three Compact-SUVs in the lineup, the Hyundai Venue is the most attractive. It follows Hyundai's latest design language while also borrowing design inspiration from its popular elder sibling, the Creta.

The Hyundai Venue comes with a dual headlamp cluster with a sleek light strip for the turn indicator on top and the main headlamp unit with the integrated LED DRLs at the bottom. The Venue also features Hyundai's signature cascading front grille at the front, adding to the appeal of the SUV. The side and rear profiles of the Venue continues with the squarish SUV-stance providing a muscular look. This is further accentuated with the squarish tail lights which get a unique cluster design.

Of the other two SUVs, the Ford EcoSport is the better looking model. Although the EcoSport has undergone a number of updates over the years, the basic silhouette has remains unchanged. The EcoSport comes with a large front grille, LED headlamps, LED DRLs and LED tail lights and offers a muscular yet sporty look which has allowed it to maintain its sales consistently over the years.

All three SUVs come with the same over dimensions. The Ford EcoSport however does come out on top, being slightly longer, taller and having a higher wheelbase compared to the other two models. With 3,998mm length, the Ford Ecosport is 3mm and 4mm longer than the Hyundai Venue and the Tata Nexon, respectively. However, the Tata Nexon is the widest SUV in the list; 41mm wider than the Hyundai Venue and 46mm more than the Ford EcoSport.

Engine & Gearbox

Starting off with the Nexon, the compact-SUV from Tata Motors is available with two engine options: a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol producing 110bhp and 170Nm of torque and a 1.5-litre diesel churning out 110bhp and 260Nm of torque. Both engines are mated to either a standard six-speed manual gearbox or the optional six-speed AMT transmission.

The Hyundai Venue will be available with three engine options. This includes a 1.2-litre petrol borrowed from the Elite i20 premium hatchback. It produces 82bhp and 115Nm of torque; mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

There is also a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine producing 120bhp and 170Nm of torque. This comes with the option of either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DCT automatic gearbox. Hyundai also offers a lone diesel option in the form of a 1.4-litre unit; the same engine which powers the Creta. It produces 89bhp and 220Nm of torque and is mated to a six-speed manual as standard.

The Ford EcoSport on the other hand is also offered with three engine options: two petrol and one diesel, similar to the Hyundai Venue. The two petrol engines include a 1.5-litre three-cylinder unit producing 123bhp and 152Nm of torque and the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine producing 125bhp and 170Nm of torque. Both engines come mated to a standard five-speed manual gearbox, with the 1.5-litre engine receiving the optional six-speed automatic transmission as well.

The diesel engine on the other hand is also a 1.5-litre unit, producing 100bhp and 205Nm of torque; mated to a five-speed manual.

The Hyundai Venue is the country's first Connected car. It comes with Hyundai's Blue Link Connectivity solution, which offers 33 features; 10 of which are specifically for the Indian market. These features include emergency assist, geo fencing, car tracking and more. Hyundai has also packed the Venue with a bunch of other features which include electric sunroof, ventilated seats, wireless charging, ABS with EBD, cruise control and many more.

The Ford EcoSport also comes loaded with features, including leather-wrapped seats, ambient lighting, puddle lamps, tyre pressure monitoring system, ABS with EBD, engine immobiliser, cruise control, emergency assistance and homesafe headlamps among others.

The Tata Nexon offers features such as multi-drive modes, smart key with push-button start, ConnectNext 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, voice commands for climate control, airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX-child seat anchorages and a host of others.

Prices for the Ford EcoSport starts at Rs 7.83 lakh and goes up all the way till Rs 11.90 lakh for the top-spec 'S' diesel variant. The Tata Nexon has a relatively more affordable starting price of Rs 6.48 lakh, which goes all up all the way to Rs 10.90 lakh; almost Rs 1 lakh cheaper than the top-spec EcoSport.

Prices for the Hyundai Venue start from Rs 6.50 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 11.10 lakh for the top-spec Venue UV. All prices of the Hyundai Venue are ex-showroom (India).

The Hyundai Venue is the latest entrant in the highly competitive compact-SUV segment in the Indian market. However, this does offer it advantages over some of its rivals in the segment. The Venue comes with all the latest bells and whistle, while also featuring the latest design language, making it an extremely attractive package.

The Ford EcoSport combines performance with efficiency and is the sportiest SUV of the lot. The 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine on the top-spec 'S' variant is the icing on the cake with the blacked-out elements which add a new dimension to the sporty compact-SUV.

The Tata Nexon is the safest bet among the three competitors. It offers a subtle design, which combines sportiness with leisure. The USP of the Tata Nexon however, is that it has the title of being the safest SUV in the segment, receiving a five-star rating in the Global NCAP crash tests.
