Volkswagen Beetle Dune Concept For Detroit Motor Show 2014

By Ganesh

Back in 2000 for the Frankfurt Auto Show Volkswagen previewed the Beetle Dune Concept. It was a regular Beetle that sported larger off-road wheels, skid plates, side sills and a raised ride height. It was a bare basic attempt at turning the humble Beetle into a desert conquering bug.

Fast forward nearly a decade and a half and VW is at it again. For the 2014 Detroit Motor Show the German automaker is bringing back the Beetle Dune Concept based on the latest version of the Bug. And this time over, the Beetle is badder than before or at least that's the impression the rendering gives.

The new Beetle Dune Concept has the same intent, but the upgrades are more aggressive. The design starts with the flared wheel arches, which accommodate large, low profile tyres. There body is covered with protective mouldings all around, large bumpers and rugged looking large side sill plates and skid plates.

VW does not intend to make any modifications to the internal hardware. Hence, the Beetle Dune Concept will come sporting the same 2.0 liter, four cylinder, turbocharged, 207 HP engine coupled to a six speed DSG dual clutch transmission.

The big question, however is whether or not VW will bring out a production model based on the Beetle Dune Concept. VW says NO and that it is a study only, but other reports claim a road worthy (or dessert worthy) version will indeed become a reality next year. We hope it does. What do you think?
