Mercedes-Benz S-Class Assembly In India Starts From April
Last year was a good one for German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz in India. The company sold over 9000 units and fell just 1000 units behind the number one premium car company in India, Audi. Mercedes thus considers 2013 as the fruitful completion of its "Year of Offensive".
2014 has been marked as the "Year of Excellence" and the automaker will try to gain back its numero uno position in the Indian market and it plans to do this with the launch of several new models, with the focus being on SUVs and sports cars.

Mercedes-Benz India began this year on a high note with the launch of the S-Class yesterday in Delhi. The first 125 units of the S500, the sole variant sold in India, were sold in the first 16 days after bookings were started late last year. Thus proving that ample demand exists for the most luxurious car from Merc's stable.
The top of the line S500 variant of the S-Class luxury cars is imported by Mercedes from Germany. But a lower end diesel variant, the S350 CDI will be assembled in India, starting from April. The S350 CDi will be priced significantly lower than the INR 1.575 crore price tag the long wheelbase S500 petrol carries and will continue to fuel demand for the premium luxury sedan.
To take on Audi and to become the top luxury car manufacturer in India, however, Mercedes will be required to concentrate on SUV models, a segment in which it lags behind its rival.

The model that is the next obvious choice for launch in India will be the GLA-Class, a crossover model based on the A-Class hatchback. Mercedes will also bring the CLA-Class sports sedan to India in 2014 and will launch several updates to its existing models.
Annual production in India has already been doubled to 20,000 units to meet the expected demand in India this year, Mercedes-Benz India CEO and MD, Eberhard Kern, said. "We have made huge investment in India for a local assembly and production plant. With a body and paint shop, we are able to churn out a substantial production from our Pune plant," he added.
