Mahindra To Determine Applicablity Of Opened Tesla Patents
Mahindra is to review the recently-opened American EV manufacturer Tesla's patents for use for their upcoming EVs, according to a report by Business Standard. Mahindra has an active EV vehicle program and the bold move by Tesla could help boost Mahindra's EV development, if indeed it finds these technologies useful.
"We have not yet reviewed the patents available. (We) will have to determine the applicability to our EV products," Mahindra & Mahindra Executive Director & President (Automotive & Farm Equipment Sectors) Pawan Goenka said.

However, the company currently holds that it is too early to say whether these patents will be beneficial, but also said that this could make people think about IP and technology sharing.

If indeed some of these patents do find applicability in Mahindra's EV research, it could mean potentially huge savings in R & D costs, so Mahindra will be hoping it does benefit. Mahindra is currently working on a range of electric vehicles including a sports car called the Halo.
Earlier this month, Tesla chief, Elon Musk has announced that the company was opening up its patents to "build electric cars fast enough to address the carbon crisis." He had also said, "We believe that Tesla, other companies making electric cars, and the world would all benefit from a common, rapidly-evolving technology platform."
