Tesla Frees Up Its Patents For Everyone To Use
In an unprecedented move, Tesla, the popular electric car manufacturer, has freed all the patents the company owns. The announcement was made by Elon Musk, company founder, in a blog post, titled "All out patents belong to you".
This means, anyone and everyone can make use of Tesla's patents related to battery technology and electric mobility. ‘Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology," Musk says.
Musk says he has open sourced Tesla's patents to help make electric mobility popular. At present, Tesla's Model S luxury electric sedan faces competition only from conventional vehicles and not from electric cars, because there's no other car like the Model S.

The electric car market still remains a niche market around the globe and one way to accelerate the growth is to fastrack technology which will enable electric cars to become more practical and less expensive.
By allowing others to use technology developed by it, Tesla is not just helping others, but also itself. Tesla's technology could now be considered as a standard platform of sorts, upon which others will develop and improve. Improvements from which everyone, including Tesla will benefit.
Improved electric cars would lead to a developed and healthy electric car segment, which in turn means more business for Tesla. In the end, it is consumers who will benefit the most from Tesla's bold and revolutionary move.
