BMW To Use Carbon Fibre And Green Tech; Non i-Models

By Ajinkya

BMW showcased their i8 at the current Auto Expo in India. The i-series consist of i3 and i8, these are German made eco-friendly car. These cars are known to use carbon fibre-reinforced plastic to create a strong shell for their cars.

Carbon fiber is used by BMW's Motorsport division to decrease the weight of their vehicles. It utilises the material to lower roof weight, decreasing center of gravity and weight saving. This is one of the few areas they use it.

The German car manufacturer now will provide this option in regular cars too. The New 7-series could be the first to receive carbon fibre components and an efficient hybrid motor, similar to that in the i8.

BMW officials explain, the X5 could be the first of their fleet to utilise the green tech seen in the i-range. This will be the first time a plug in will be used in the xDrive AWD drive system.

BMW will also utilise aerodynamics in future projects based on their Future Philosophy. Their entire line-up of cars is tested in a wind tunnel for drag efficiency.

For example the X5 records a drag coefficient of 0.31, which is better compared to Porsche Cayenne's 0.36. This would be great if BMW offers top of the line components and features in normal BMW cars too.
