Volkswagen has decided to pull out the Passat luxury sedan from its inventory in India. The announcement follows a similar decision by Honda to stop sales of the Accord in India, earlier today.

Volkswagen Passat, like its Honda counterpart Accord, suffered from extreme lack of demand, triggered by various factors. First, production cost has increased due to rupee depreciation, decreasing profit margins for the manufacturers. Second, the emergence of the German luxury brands in India, namely Mercedes, Audi and BMW, has shifted buyer preference, who can now afford to own entry level luxury cars instead of a VW or a Honda.

Just 235 units of the Volkswagen Passat were sold from the start of the ongoing financial year. A number that's similar to the Honda Accord. VW Passat comes with a 2.0 liter diesel engine, with a starting price of INR 26 lakhs, which goes up to INR 32 lakhs.
VW has no intention of bringing back the Passat to India anytime soon. The German automaker could reintroduce the luxury saloon in India in 2015 when the next gen Passat is launched globally.
