Honda Accord Discontinued In India Owing To Poor Sales

By Ganesh

Honda Cars India has stopped sales of its flagship sedan model, Accord owing to lack of demand and slowing sales. The current generation Accord that's sold in India was introduced about five years back in 2008 and since then only 11,492 units of the Japanese premium sedan has hit the streets.

The official confirmation was given by Jnaneshwar Sen, senior vice-president for marketing and sales at Honda Cars India, to ET. Mr. Sen also confirmed that the next generation Accord would be reintroduced in India, but said a time frame for the same had not been confirmed.

One of the main reason for poor demand was the lack of a diesel engine. D-segment cars from other manufacturers with diesel engines have eaten into the Accord's sales. And it's not just segment rivals such as Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla Altis that hurt Honda, but also products from luxury car makers such as Mercedes, Audi, BMW and Volvo. In the last eight months, Honda managed to sell just 272 units of the Accord.

The eighth generation Honda Accord is powered by a four cylinder 2.4 liter engine rated at 180 PS and 222 Nm of torque and a 3.5 liter V6 engine capable of 275 PS and 339 Nm of torque. Both engine options came with 5 speed automatic transmission, while the base engine was also available with a 5 speed manual.
