Electric carmaker Tesla's CEO Elon Musk, who had earlier confirmed an entry level model, which he had said, was possible by year 2014, has now confirmed such a model would launch by 2016. An entry level Tesla would be priced in the vicinity of a regular electric car such as the Nissan Leaf.

The entry level Tesla which Musk referred to as Gen III was confirmed during an investor's meet. Musk said "It will probably arrive at the end of 2016 I would say - the third-generation vehicle, or the vehicle that is in a lot of ways a smaller version of the Tesla Model S at about half the price." This would mean the Gen III would be priced in the region of $25,000 to $30,000.

The meeting revealed further details about the upcoming Model X electric SUV. Musk revealed that the Model X all-electric SUV, that will launch before the end of the year, will be a seven seater and will feature the Falcon door from the concept model (similar to the gullwings found in the Merc SLS AMG).

About the Model X he further added, "Because the battery is in the floor-pan, it should have the lowest centre gravity of any SUV and as a result, extremely good handling. We want to have something that has the handling of a sports car and also looks great, but has more functionality than a minivan. We're aiming to have initial cars in customer hands at the end of next year."

The most promising statement he made, however, was about two new variants of the Tesla Model S. One of these variants will be China specific, while the other would be aimed at the rest of Asia. Will the latter come to India? We'll have to wait and watch.
