Elon Musk Confirms Mass Market ‘Budget’ Tesla; To Start Sales In Asia

By Ganesh

Tesla is the first electric car manufacturer in history to achieve the same level of success as a conventional car manufacturer, in some cases even surpassing the value of established conventional car makers. The reason behind the success is the Model S electric sedan, the company's only product.

The high reliability, performance and unsurpassed safety of the Model S speaks for itself. Demand for the electric sedan is extremely high inspite of it being a relatively expensive car. Demand forced Tesla to start offering Model S outside of North America for the first time, in Europe earlier this year. But this is just the start.

Mass market car
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has reiterated what he had confirmed earlier. The company will start manufacturing a mass market electric car, costing half of what Model S costs. With the new car business will expand to new markets in Asia as well as Europe.

Musk has told Bloomberg that new facilities will be built to support the production of the said car as demand for it expected to skyrocket, if sales of Model S are any indication. The company will also limit the production capacity of Model S to accommodate the production of the new 'budget' Tesla.

"We'll try to locate those close to where people are, close to where the customers are, to minimize the logistics costs of getting the car to them," the Tesla co-founder said in an interview with Bloomberg Television's Betty Liu. "I think long term you can see Tesla establishing factories in Europe, in other parts of the U.S. and in Asia."

Apart from the planned mass market car, Tesla will expand its current product offering by starting the production of Model X, an electric SUV, late next year.

Accolades
Speaking during the interview Musk said Tesla will start offering the new mass market within five years time and once it does "We'll start seeing hundreds of thousands of electric cars going to market every year," he said. Musk is certainly optimistic about the new mass market car and why wouldn't he be. The Model S has been praised universally. A few notable recognitions received among the many include 2013 "Car of the Year" title by Motor Trend magazine and Consumer Reports' admitting it as the one of the best car ever reviewed by it.

Then comes the latest image booster from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. NHTSA called the Model S the safest car it had ever tested.

Now to answer the question of whether or not Tesla will sell the new mass market model in India. Unfortunately, we think the answer would be no. At least not in the near future. Not until the political atmosphere in our country becomes suitable for hybrids and electric car manufacturers and infrastructure problems are solved.
