Tata Motors Nano Diesel Confirmed; Coming By March 2014
Confirmation has arrived regarding the launch of the diesel engined Tata Nano. Speaking to Reuters, Karl Slym, Managing Director, Tata Motors, revealed the car was due for launch by the end of the financial year.
""The diesel Nano is still (going) ahead, but not launched yet... This financial year"", the publication quotes him as saying.
The launch of the diesel engine is expected to be the cornerstone in the Nano's disappointing life that began in 2009, as the world's cheapest car. Tata Motors has put high hopes on the launch of the diesel engine which is expected to bring in buyers who were never interested in the ultra compact car.

Nano diesel engine facts
The engine is 800cc unit and will be the smallest diesel mill in India upon launch. The two cylinder unit will deliver power in the region of 40 BHP at 4,000 rpm. The most exciting aspect about the engine, however, has to be the mileage. It is speculated to be in the region of 35-40 kmpl. This would not only make it the most fuel efficient diesel engine, but the most efficient conventional car in India.
The engine is in fact a variant of Tata Motors DICOR range. However, owing to the small dimension, components had to be developed specifically for the engine. Component suppliers include Robert Bosch and Garrett. The turbocharger, developed by Garrett specially for the Nano engine, is one of the smallest ever developed by the company.
The introduction of the diesel engine is part of the complete makeover being given to Tata Nano. In fact, the process is an ongoing one, started with the latest gen model and the ‘smart city car campaign'. In the coming months a CNG petrol variant, showcased at the HORIZONEXT event, will join the lineup.
