Tata Nano Diesel Gets Caught On Camera

By Ganesh

To counter dwindling sales and to prevent the Nano from turning into a total disaster Tata Motors recently turned tactics and started targeting a different segment of buyers, namely the urban youth. Tata Nano is no longer being marketed as a the world's most affordable car, but rather as a fun and colourful small car.

But to further improve the Nano's prospects more needs to be done and in India launching a diesel model helps a lot. Rumours of the missing variant of Nano has been the rounds, a few spy shots of the same have also been captured before. Here is the latest set of closeup spy shots.

Currently, offered only with a 624cc 2 cylinder engine, rated at 36 HP, the 2014 Tata Nano delivers an ARAI certified fuel economy of 23.6 km/l. The upcoming diesel engine will be an 800cc 3 cylinder unit, which will not only generate more power, but will also deliver better mileage. In fact, it is believed to become the most fuel efficient diesel in India.

In that case the mileage would have to be more than 25.8 km/l, the ARAI certified mileage of Honda Amaze diesel.

From the spyshots you can notice that the front grille/bumper panel is different, sporting a plastic pattern and closed fog lamp housing, which are round instead of narrow slits.

Also to be noticed is the missing front passenger side ORVM, which is a cost cutting measure. The same sort of plastic grille from the front also features at the rear.

Apart from these points, everything else appears to be the same as the existing Nano. The new front grille design leads us to believe that the diesel Nano will be launched as 2015 model year car, scheduled to be launched next year. The petrol version would also get the same grille design in that case.

Nano diesel will, however, face new competition upon its debut from the Maruti Suzuki 800cc diesel engined model, which will also be launched in 2014.
