McLaren P1's Sub 7 Min Nurburgring Lap Time Target
From what we have heard and read about the McLaren P1 hypercar we know it is incredibly fast. Its not the top speed or straight line speed that matters the most, but how fast a car can corner. And that speed comes with enormous downforce, which McLaren P1 develops in plenty.
So, when last week Chinese website Autohome.come.cn posted an image (seen below) from an official McLaren slide everyone believed it. The images shows a lap time around Nurburgring Nordschleife of just 6.33.26 seconds!
If you are not too familiar with lap times set at Nurburgring then let me tell you that only a handful of cars in history have ever posted a sub 7 min lap time around the famed Nurburgring. This includes the Radical SR8 LM (6:48), a production car and the Pagani Zonda R (6:47.50), a non-production car.
With the story fast spreading McLaren decided to give an official response. In a statement given to Jalopnik McLaren said the following: "The image in question was included on a slide which was part of a mood board to inspire the design team for the McLaren P1, and not the engineers, who are working to a target time of ‘merely' sub-7 minutes"
Sigh! So McLaren P1 did not shatter the existing record time by 14 seconds. But its not all bad news. By giving that statement McLaren has officially confirmed it is aiming for that mark. If any existing production car can achieve that record it will be McLaren P1.
