Fastest Nurburgring Lap Times: The 6 Min Barrier

By Ganesh

Porsche officially set a new sub-7 minute Nurburgring lap time with its 918 Spyder hybrid supercar (the fastest production car to do so, not considering the barely legal Radical SR8). But this could soon be challenged by the McLaren P1. It is already rumored to have lapped faster than the 918 Spyder on slick tyres. So, it is only a matter of time before a lap time with regular tyres is set.

Most supercars that lap the Green Hell have only managed a lap time above the 7 minute mark. Over the years the crowd in the vicinity of 7 minutes has thickened, but very few cars have been able to lap in less than 7 minutes.

But are you aware of the car that currently holds the record? You'll be surprised to know that it is a car from the 1980s. On the other hand, Bugatti Veyron's time is bested by at least two dozen cars. Only six cars, in the history of the Ring have ever managed to lap the ~20 km long circuit is less than 7 minutes. The following gallery will tell you more about these legends.

Ferrari 312T (Formula 1 race car)

The record lap time got former F1 champion Niki Lauda the pole position during the 1975 German Grand Prix qualifying session. Goes to show how technologically advanced an F1 car is, considering production cars today still struggle to break the 6 minute barrier.

Ferrari 599XX (Non-road legal)

Ferrari 599XX (Non-road legal)

Lap Time: 6:58.16 (Incidentally, both Ferraris, separated by more than 3 decades have lapped in 6.58 minutes)
Distance Covered: 20.8 km
Date: 21 April 2010

Ferrari 599XX (Non-road legal)

The second fastest time for a "production derived" sports car.

The 720 HP Ferrari 599XX is derived from the Ferrari 599 GTO, but it is a track only car, which is neither road legal, nor can it participate in races without being modified suitably.

Porsche 918 Spyder

Porsche coincided the announcement of its record Nurburging lap time with the launch of launch at the Frankfurt Auto Show. Driver Marc Lieb acheived a lap time of 6 minutes 57 seconds behind the 918 Spyder.

Radical SR8 (Production car)

Radical SR8 is trackday sports car manufactured by British manufacturer Radical Sportscars. The SR8 series is the most powerful offering by Radical. The Radical SR8 range is powered by a 2.7 liter V8 engine rated at 430 HP. The engine is mated to a six speed transmission with paddle shifters. The SR8 maintained its title of the fastest production car until it was broken by its successor.

Radical SR8 LM (Production car)

Lap Time: 6:47.50
Distance Covered: 20.8 km

At present the fastest non-road legal car to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit.

The Zonda R was a test lab on wheels because Pagani used the car as a testbed for the Zonda replacement, Huayra. The Zonda R's AMG sourced V12 engine produces 740 HP, but powers a car that weighs just 1,070 kg. Like the Ferrari 599XX, the Zonda R is a track only, non-race homologated car and hence a direct competitor to the Ferrari.

Developed by Porsche to race in the FIA World Sportscar Championship, the world record lap time was set during the 1983 1000k Sportscar qualifying run. The Porsche 956 was blisteringly quick due to its lightweight construction, which was partly made from fiberglass and kevlar. The car weighed just 800 km and had a 635 HP Flat-6 power it!

And that folks, is the end of this list. Hope you enjoyed reading it.
