Maruti Suzuki Sri Lankan Manufacturing Plant Being Contemplated

Maruti Suzuki, the market leader when it comes to low cost mass manufactured small cars, is reportedly looking to expand its clout beyond India. According to media reports, the automaker is planning to set up an assembly plant in Sri Lanka.

Nothing is official though as Maruti Suzuki is still conducting various studies to weight in the pros and cons such as getting a measure of the economic viability of such a project. And even before such a facility is set up the company will have to work out details related to taxation and workers with the Sri Lankan government. A few sities around Colombo are being earmarked as a possible site for a future facility, reports Autocar Professional.

Besides Sri Lanka Maruti Suzuki is also strengthening its sales network in emerging markets of Africa.

Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki Chairman, R C Bhargava, downplayed media claims that Suzuki, Maruti's Japanese parent company was looking to increase its stake in the latter. He said that Suzuki had no such intentions at present.

Back home, the automaker's growth strategy continues to be its focus on budget cars. Maruti is happy to let other carmakers slug it out in the premium car segment. Meanwhile, Maruti intends to cement its place in rural areas, which account for 30 percent of the company's total sales. In the last one year the company has extended its reach to 60,000 villages from 40,000 and it intends to cover 1,00,000 villages by March 2014.

Maruti is planning on launching several new budget vehicles, including a new light commercial vehicles, all of which will be powered by a new family of engines, currently being developed by Suzuki in Japan.
