Maruti Suzuki Working On New 800cc Diesel Engine

By Ganesh

Maruti Suzuki's 800cc petrol engine is no less than a legend in its own right. The Small displacement, highly economic sub-liter Maruti Suzuki engine has virtually driven a significant part of the Indian automobile market for decades, first in the form of the Maruti 800, followed by the Alto. If there has ever been a complaint it has been regarding the non-availability of a 800cc diesel engine.

According to the Financial Express though, Maruti Suzuki is already well on its way into offering India's smallest diesel engine till date. Citing its sources, FE states that an 800cc diesel engine will power the company's upcoming global small car, codenamed YL7.

"The diesel engine plan is on the speed lane for Maruti. While the petrol model of the YL7 will be launched first around the Auto Expo, the start of production for the diesel variant is for later part of the year. The YL7 will be exported from India to various markets and, in some, will also be sold as the new Alto," the report quotes the sources as saying.

The new engine in development is said to be capable of delivering a fuel economy of 30 kmpl. The smallest diesel power plant in India is offered by Chevrolet Beat, which is a 996cc unit, with a fuel economy of approximately 25 kmpl.

What's more interesting is that Maruti Suzuki is not the only manufacturer working on a sub-liter diesel unit. Tata Motors is also employed on the same task, developing a diesel engine for the Nano. However, there is no confirmation regarding when the diesel Nano will be launched.

Coming back to Maruti Suzuki's new car, the YL7. This car will be the replacement model for the A-Star and Zen Estilo and could even be marketed as the next gen Alto in some markets outside India. The report further names the YL1 and YAD, an SX4 replacement and a new compact SUV respectively.

Maruti Suzuki's present diesel line-up is centered around the Fiat 1.3 liter multi-jet engine, slightly tweaked versions of which goes into nearly half a dozen Maruti models. Suzuki wants to stop its reliance on Fiat by introducing indigenously developed 1.2 liter and 1.4 liter diesel units to run its various models, including the next gen Wagon R.
