Mahindra XUV500 W4 For A Price Of INR 10.99 lakh?
Remember the new low cost base variant of the Mahindra XUV500 which the automaker confirmed earlier this year. It is now being reported that launch of the said XUV500 W4 trim has been set for a pre-diwali schedule and the price of the variant will be INR 10.99 lakhs. (Ex-showroom, Delhi)
Mahindra currently sells the XUV500 in W8 and base W6 variants, with the latter priced slightly over INR 12 lakhs. The W4 base variant, that will cost about INR 1 lakh less will thus be able to effectively challenge newly arrived competitors such as the Nissan Terrano.

Features that will be missing
The story carried by AutoCarIndia reports that the W4 trim will miss the following features:
Rain sensing wipers, automatic cornering headlamps, fog lamps, telescopic steering adjustment, automatic climate control, powered OVRM, cruise control, steering mounted audio controls, 8 way adjustable driver seat, tyre pressure monitor and premium upholstery.

Features to be available
The features which the new base variant will get include a more basic infotainment system, a CD player instead of DVD player, four speaker system, dual tone interiors, six way adjustable driver seat, remote locking projector headlamps, LED parking lamps, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, disc brake and tilt adjustable steering.

Mechanically, the base XUV W4 will remain as it is, powered by the 2.2 liter diesel engine, rated at 140 bhp and 330 Nm torque and mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Most importantly, Mahindra has made sure the base W4 looks no different than the W6 variant on the outside.

This sounds as a sound strategy from Mahindra to ward off competition which it has been receiving from Renault, Ford and Nissan with their respective compact SUVs. The low cost XUV500 still looks larger and meaner than its competitors and has a distinct styling advantage over its direct rival, Terrano. Let us know your thoughts.
