Ferrari Plans More Hybrids, But Never Electric Cars

By Ganesh

The present decade will go down in automotive history as the decade of the hybrids. The decade when hybrid drivetrains started making a lasting impact on the automotive world, laying down the foundation for a future where hybrids, and eventually other greener technologies will power every automobile.

Setting the stage in March 2013, in Geneva, were hybrid hypercars - McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari. In September yet another hybrid hypercar will be revealed. Porsche 918 Spyder. If you are still a skeptic then Ferrari boss Luca Cordero di Montezemolo's recent statement to Bloomberg will convince you.

When asked if more hybrid cars are to be expected from Maranello Montezemolo said, "..the answer is yes, without exceeding." By that he meant, "I don't believe in the electric cars, but I strongly believe in hybrids," Luca Cordero di Montezemolo told the publication.

Ferrari does not want to dilute the experience of driving by developing pure electric cars, which do not give the same feeling as driving a gasoline engined vehicle. The very reason LaFerrari does not provide pure electric driving mode like McLaren P1 does.

Coming back to hybrid engines. These powertrains, a cross between electric and conventional engines, have already proved their worth. We now know they can be employed to generate more power than a conventional engine, while still consuming less fuel. Its not just speed. The Range Rover Hybrids announced by Land Rover have proved hybrid vehicle are in no way a hindrance for off-roading.

Here is hoping for a greener future without compromises. As for the next hybrid Ferrari, perhaps we'll next get a hybrid 458 Speciale at next year's Paris Auto Show.
