Range Rover & Range Rover Sport Hybrids Revealed; 2013 Silk Trail
While Land Rover continues its successful testing of the all electric Defender prototype, the green mission will be carried out by production ready version of the Range Rover Hybrid and Range Rover Sport Hybrid models, now revealed.
To prove the off roading capabilities of the new hybrid vehicles Land Rover will take them on a 10,000 mile journey. The expedition will trace the ancient Silk Route, starting from France and reaching India via Poland, Russia and China. The journey will end in mid-October at Tata Motors headquarters in Mumbai.
Land Rover will start taking orders for the two new hybrid models from September 10 in the UK and deliveries will begin in early 2014. Here are the details about the upcoming hybrids.

Engine
Powering both models will be the same 3.0 liter turbodiesel V6 unit from the regular Range Rovers. This is mated to a 35 kW (47 HP)/125 lb-ft electric motor. Range Rover and Sport Hybrid models will thus have 335 HP and 516 lb-ft of torque at their disposal.

Fuel Economy & Emission
Weighing in at 2372 kg for the Sport & 2394 kg for the Range Rover, they are not particularly light, but they are still lighter than the regular models, even with the added weight of the hybrid unit weighing 120 kg. LR claims the vehicles will deliver a fuel economy of 18.7 km/l and CO2 emission figure of 169g/km, an improvement of 16 percent over a conventional Range Rover.

Performance
Mated to the ZF eight-speed automatic transmission delivering power to all four wheels, the RR and RR S Hybrids will have the same off roading capability as the regular version, thanks to the Terrain Response 2 system. 0-100 km/h time for the RR and RR Sport hybrids will be 7.1 sec and 6.9 sec respectively. Top speed will be 217 km/h and 225 km.h respectively.

Electric mode
The hybrid vehicles will come with a pure electric mode though it won't be of much use. Travelling at not more 48 km/h, the electric mode will provide a range of about 1 mile.
