Land Rover Defender Pickup Truck To Arrive By 2017
The next generation Land Rover Defender, or whatever they decide to call its successor, will also sport a pickup truck variant. The next gen Defender is expected to make its debut in 2016.
According to What Car?, which spoke to Land Rover design chief Gerry McGovern, the new Defender will be built in various body types and that includes a pickup truck variant. However, this variant will only arrive in 2017. After the regular, five and seven seater, coupe and four door variants have been launched.

The report further states that Land Rover would pit the Defender pickup against vehicles such as the VW Amarok. This means the Defender pickup will be a four door, five seater pickup. McGovern also informed that the pickup would not be a stripped out utilitarian vehicle, but a premium pickup.
The new vehicle will also come with permanent all-wheel drive and will offer better off roading capabilities than any other vehicle in its segment.

The current generation Defender will retire in 2015 as the iconic SUV will no longer be able to comply with new Euro 6 emission norms. It's successor may or may not take its inspiration from the DC100 concept.
Land Rover is also look to take the new vehicle across its shores to markets such as the U.S, where it is currently not allowed to be sold. A premium Defender pickup variant, however, is unlikely to be added to its India lineup, but the same won't be true about the regular next-gen Defender.
