Land Rover Defender Production To End In December 2015
Production of Land Rover Defender, the iconic SUV from the United Kingdom will come to an end in little over two years. The news has been confirmed by Jaguar Land Rover spokespersons to Automotive Business Review.
Life of the very first Defender did not begin as the Defender at all, but as the Series I Land Rover, all the back in 1948. Over the years it evolved, but retained its core design and capabilities, that of being a work horse. The Defender name came into existence in 1990.

The very last Defender will be manufactured in Land Rover's Solihull factory in the West Midlands in December 2015. So, when the last Defender leaves the manufacturing plant it will be 67 years since the birth of a legendary vehicle.
Over the years the Land Rover Defender design has remained virtually the same, but it has never lost its appeal. The only reason why the company is forced to end production is due to the every tightening emission rules. The bulky SUV cannot be developed, in its current form, to meet future emission standards in several countries. In fact, the Defender is not sold in the U.S due to this reason.

As for the replacement model that will fill in the space we have little to no knowledge. The DC 100 concept SUV, originally thought to be the replacement may or may not take the Defender's place.
According to a Jaguar Land Rover spokesperson who spoke to ABR, "A replacement vehicle will join the Land Rover range, but the Defender in its current format is coming to an end." We are not sure what Land Rover means by "the Defender in its current format is coming to an end", but it sounds ominous.
