After all, it is a muscle car and fuel efficiency is the last thing a muscle car enthusiasts is generally concerned about. So, it is a big deal when you learn that Ford is mulling production of diesel, hybrid and even electric versions of the Mustang.

The 6th generation pony car, for the first time in its almost 50 year long history, will be a global model when it will be launch in April 17, 2014. The Mustang will be sold by Ford across Europe, Asia and Australia. And this makes the introduction of engines other than petrol ones essential, as diesel is less expensive petrol in several countries.

The other obvious reason that could lead to the introduction of hybrid and electric powertrains are new emission standards. Speaking to GoAuto, Fascetti revealed that Ford is not considering a diesel engine at the moment, but fuel consumption goals will necessitate such a move.

While the upgraded engines of the 6th gen Mustang, including the 5.0 liter V8, comply with current emission standards and have been "future proofed to a large extent", according to Fascetti, hybrid and electric engines are inevitable in the future as they will become the only way to meet long term emission standards.

Ford has not released emission and fuel consumption figures of the engine range powering the 2015 Mustang, but they are the cleanest and most economical of its predecessors. Moreover, Ford has already taken the first big step towards a cleaner future with the introduction of the new 2.3 litre four cylinder GTDI EcoBoost variant, which is the most efficient Mustang ever.
