Ferrari F1 Engine For 2014 Season Named 059/3

By Ganesh

As the year comes to a close the start of 2014 Formula 1 season inches closer. With both Mercedes-Benz and Renault already having revealed their engines for the upcoming racing season it leaves Ferrari as the third and the only remaining engine manufacturer that's yet to come out with theirs. The Italians have now taken the first step by releasing a name - 059/3.

The new name is accompanied by an official video in which engineers from Ferrari and their partners explain what little can be shared with the public. About the engines, the new regulation changes, how the new rules shaped the new engines and a brief intro to the technology that will power the 2014 F1 cars.

The rule changes are so drastic that it is widely believed to the most extensive since the early days of F1. For instance, turbochargers will be used for the first time since 1988. Also, the emphasis is on fuel efficiency and engine reliability, two factors which are more crucial than they have ever been in F1 history.

In an earlier statement Ferrari engine and electronics development head, Luca Marmorini had stated that the new engines are so technologically advanced and complex, with the addition of several additional components, that they are no longer referred to as "engines", but as "power units".

The Ferrari 059/3 power unit, like the ones from Merc-AMG and Renault, is a 1.6 liter V6 unit, with an expected power output in the region of 600 HP. The ICE works in tandem with two electric motors which also perform the additional task of generating/recovering power, adding an extra 161 HP.

These and other radical changes, the workings of which are well explained in the video below, will help teams complete a race with the newly specified fuel limit of 100 liters/race. The 2014 Formula 1 racers will be powered by power units that we mileage obsessed Indians will approve of.
