Mitsubishi Outlander To Return To India In 2014 With Diesel Unit
Earlier this year, Mitsubishi made it clear that it only wanted to do business in India as a premium SUV brand. Towards this end the Japanese company withdrew its sedan products - Cedia Sports and Evo X. At the same time, the Outlander petrol was also discontinued owing to poor sales. Financial Express has now learned from P Vijayan, COO of HM, that the Outlander will make a comeback in 2014, albeit with a diesel engine.
"The company is working on the new model of the diesel version and will launch it in early 2014. It will be a more rejuvenated model and will be placed in the UV 4 segment (premium). As Mitsubishi's partner in India, we want to focus only on the utility vehicle segment and one can see more variants/models of Mitsubishi Pajero and Outlander going forward in India," Vijayan stated.

The diesel Outlander that will return in 2014 will be the 3rd gen model that was launched last year internationally. This also means the SUV will now offer several new features, as well as a more premium interior.
As for the engine, the 2014 Outlander diesel, sold internationally, is offered with a 2.2 liter turbo diesel, rated at 147 HP and 380 Nm of torque. The SUV is offered in both 6-speed manual and automatic transmission option.

During its earlier stint the 2nd gen Outlander was imported to India, making it an unattractive choice for many. Mitsubishi could change that this time over by assembling it locally at Hindustan Motors' Tiruvallur facility near Chennai, thus keeping the asking price in check. Once launched, the 2014 Outlander diesel will join the Pajero Sport and Montero SUV, completing the all SUV lineup.
