Volkswagen 1.0L TSI Engine Future Uncertain Under Euro 7 – What It Means For India
Volkswagen's 1.0L TSI engine is facing uncertainty following the introduction of the new Euro 7 emission norms in European markets. This smaller three-cylinder engine has been the most affordable powertrain option for the brand in markets like India.
Volkswagen To Discontinue 1.0L TSI?
German car manufacturer Volkswagen is one of the most reputable brands worldwide. According to a report by Cartoq, the company faces challenges in continuing the 1.0L TSI three-cylinder engine under the new Euro 7 regulations. However, the company has clarified that it is not discontinuing this engine, at least for now. This engine is currently sold in several international markets, including India.

The brand operates in India alongside its sister companies, Skoda and Audi. After discontinuing diesel powertrains, Volkswagen now offers models powered by 1.0L TSI, 1.5L TSI, and 2.0L TSI engines across its lineup.
The 1.0L TSI is one of the most trusted engine options, featured in cars like the Taigun, Virtus, Slavia and Kushaq. This compact three-cylinder engine delivers a strong balance of fuel efficiency and performance at a more accessible price point.

New Euro 7 Norms
According to several reports, the new Euro 7 emission norms which is set to be introduced later this year will make it increasingly challenging for the brand to continue offering this engine, and it could face discontinuation in the future. In that scenario, the 1.5L TSI engine may become the new entry-level powertrain, which is more expensive and could increase overall ownership costs.
To comply with stricter emission standards, Volkswagen is also expected to update its lineup with more advanced 1.5L or 1.2L four-cylinder engines. These engines are likely to be more efficient, refined and future-ready compared to the current three-cylinder unit.

VW to Focus on EVs & Hybrids
The Volkswagen Group already has a versatile EV platform, known as MEB, which supports multiple electric vehicles. In addition, hybrid and plug-in hybrid options are also expected to be introduced, potentially replacing smaller displacement engines over time.
What's For the Indian Market?
For the Indian market, the 1.0L TSI remains the most preferred powertrain among buyers. It makes Volkswagen's products more accessible while still offering strong performance and the driving pleasure of a German engineered car.
The price gap between the 1.0L TSI and the 1.5L TSI is also significant, making the smaller engine a crucial option in the lineup. To further improve efficiency and drivability, Volkswagen has also introduced an 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

Therefore, discontinuing the 1.0L TSI in India is unlikely to happen in the near future. It is also the only engine option currently paired with a manual transmission. Traditionally, many Indian consumers prefer manual gearboxes due to their affordability and engaging driving experience.
The upcoming BS7 emission norms in India are expected to be closely aligned with Euro 7 standards. As a result, Volkswagen will need to prepare in advance to ensure compliance, especially at a time when the brand is planning to introduce multiple new products in the Indian market this year.
