Volkswagen Starts Tayron R-Line Assembly In India Ahead Of Launch
Volkswagen has started local assembly of the Tayron R-Line in India at its Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar manufacturing facility in Maharashtra. The SUV is being assembled via the CKD (Completely Knocked Down) route ahead of its planned India launch in Q1 2026.
The Volkswagen Tayron R-Line will be positioned as Volkswagen's most premium SUV for the Indian market, placed above the Tiguan R-Line in the brand's local portfolio. It also marks Volkswagen's re-entry into the three-row SUV segment, a space it exited after discontinuing the Tiguan Allspace in 2021.

Local assembly is aimed at controlling costs and improving supply flexibility compared to full imports. The VW Tayron R-Line will be offered as a seven-seat SUV, with a longer wheelbase and larger overall footprint than the Tiguan R-Line, allowing for a usable third row and increased cabin space.
The Tayron is built on Volkswagen Group's MQB EVO platform, which underpins several global Volkswagen and Skoda models. For India, the Tayron R-Line is expected to be offered with a single petrol powertrain. Power is expected to come from a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, producing 204PS and 320Nm of torque. The engine is expected to be paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission and 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
The R-Line specification indicates sportier exterior and interior elements compared to standard trims sold globally. These typically include R-Line-specific bumpers, alloy wheels, black exterior detailing, sport seats and interior trim upgrades, although final India-spec equipment details have not yet been announced.
In terms of positioning, the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line will operate in the premium three-row SUV segment, where it will sit above mass-market seven-seaters and below luxury-brand offerings and act as the German giant's flagship offering for India. Volkswagen has not revealed pricing, but local assembly suggests it will be positioned lower than fully imported models previously offered in this space.
Volkswagen has confirmed that the Tayron R-Line will be assembled in India rather than imported as a CBU. No diesel engine option has been announced for the Indian market. Final variant details, feature lists and pricing are expected closer to launch.
