Volkswagen Discontinues Taigun & Virtus 1.5L TSI Manual — Bad News For Enthusiasts

Volkswagen India has discontinued the manual gearbox option for the Volkswagen Taigun and Volkswagen Virtus 1.5L TSI powertrains. This move comes as a big shock for enthusiasts who love the high-revving nature and engaging manual gearshifts offered by the larger engine. However, the regular 1.0L TSI engine will continue to offer the 6-speed manual gearbox.

Volkswagen India Discontinues 1.5L TSi Manual Gearbox

Volkswagen's entry-level cars in India are the Taigun and the Virtus, which compete in the mid-size compact SUV and sedan segments, respectively. Both cars are known for their excellent driving dynamics, handling, and performance. The Virtus, in particular, is widely appreciated for its sporty nature and raw driving experience.

The 1.5-litre TSI is the most powerful powertrain option available in these models and was previously offered with a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission. While most family buyers prefer the automatic gearbox, driving enthusiasts have always gravitated towards the 6-speed manual for its engaging driving feel, adrenaline-filled acceleration, and high-revving character.

However, with the discontinuation of the 6-speed manual variant, enthusiasts are left disappointed. The manual option not only delivered the most engaging driving experience but also helped keep the entry price of the 1.5L TSI variants relatively lower.

The 1.5L TSI four-cylinder EVO petrol engine produces 150 hp and 250 Nm of torque and is now available only with the 7-speed DSG transmission. Meanwhile, the smaller 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine generates 115 PS and 178 Nm of torque and continues to be offered with both a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

Both the Taigun and Virtus have achieved a 5-star safety rating at Global NCAP and are equipped with over 40 safety features. Currently, the 1.5L TSI Virtus starts at ₹18.79 lakh (ex-showroom), while the 1.5L TSI Taigun is priced from ₹18.94 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Taigun competes with models such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Tata Sierra, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, and Skoda Kushaq. The Virtus rivals cars such as the Hyundai Verna, Skoda Slavia, and Honda City. Volkswagen-owned Skoda Auto had already discontinued the manual gearbox option for its 1.5L TSI engine back in September 2024.
