VinFast VF6 Gets 5-Star Bharat NCAP Safety Rating

The VinFast VF6 has secured a 5-star safety rating under the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP), recording strong overall scores for adult and child occupant protection despite a noted shortfall in one area during frontal crash testing.

In the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) category, the VF6 scored 27.13 points out of a possible 32. During the frontal offset deformable barrier test, protection for the driver's head and neck was rated as good, while protection for the driver's chest was rated as poor, resulting in a deduction of points.

Protection for the driver's thighs and lower legs was assessed as adequate, and the footwell area was reported as stable, indicating no structural collapse in the passenger compartment.
Protection for the front passenger in the frontal test was rated higher overall, with no critical weaknesses highlighted. The restraint systems were able to control occupant movement effectively, contributing to the vehicle's overall AOP score.

In the side movable deformable barrier test, the VF6 achieved a full score, with protection for the head, chest, abdomen and pelvis rated as good. The vehicle met all performance requirements in the side impact assessment, which played a significant role in securing the overall 5-star rating despite the chest protection shortfall observed in the frontal impact test.

For Child Occupant Protection (COP), the VF6 scored 44.41 points out of 49. The vehicle demonstrated strong performance in dynamic crash tests using child restraint systems, with controlled dummy movement and stable installation. Compatibility with child seats and anchorage systems contributed to the high score in this category.

The Bharat NCAP protocol evaluates vehicles across frontal impact, side impact and child occupant tests, with minimum score thresholds required to achieve higher star ratings. While the VF6 lost points due to the poor chest protection rating for the driver in the frontal test, the overall scores remained comfortably above the limits required for a 5-star classification.

Standard safety equipment on the VinFast VF6 includes seven airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and ISOFIX child seat anchorages, all of which are mandatory for vehicles aiming for the highest Bharat NCAP rating. These systems are offered as standard and contribute to the vehicle's performance during testing.

The VF6 joins a growing list of vehicles, including its larger sibling the VF7 that have achieved top ratings under Bharat NCAP, reflecting increasing focus on structural integrity and standardised safety equipment in new vehicle development. The result also follows a similar 5-star rating achieved by the larger VF7, placing both VinFast electric SUVs at the top tier of the current Bharat NCAP safety scale.
