Vinfast’s Big India Bet Explained: Here For The Long Haul
Fresh off a visit to Vietnam, Drivepark's Reviews Editor Promeet Ghosh sat down with tech creator and the Reviews Lead for our sister publication Gizbot, Robin John, over coffee to unpack one company that has quickly become the centre of conversations about India's EV conversation, Vinfast.
The podcast episode drew heavily from Promeet's first-hand experience at Vinfast's global manufacturing base in Hai Phong, as the duo get away from the hype machine and take a ground-level look at the scale behind Vinfast's India ambitions.
Is Vinfast In India For The Long Term?
Promeet described walking through the Hai Phong facility as stepping inside a fully mature production ecosystem. Spread across about 1,200 acres, the complex operates with very high levels of automation, with robots handling large sections of the build process while finished electric vehicles move steadily off the lines. For us in India, the takeaway was simple: Vinfast is entering our market with an established manufacturing backbone already in place.
From there, the conversation shifted to intent. Robin raised the question many potential buyers will: Is India a trial market or a long-term play? Promeet's response centred on Vingroup, Vinfast's parent conglomerate, whose presence extends across sectors including real estate, technology, healthcare and mobility.
This allows Vingroup to integrate research, battery development, production and quality control within a single ecosystem. The Hai Phong plant itself, he noted, was built in roughly 21 months, illustrating the pace at which the group executes large projects.

Vinfast's India Adventure & Why It Matters?
India is now part of that expansion story. Vinfast has invested $500M into developing a major manufacturing hub in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, which currently has the capacity to manufacture 50,000 vehicles per year (which can be scaled up to 150,000 vehicles/year) for both domestic consumption and exports. The plant is now being expanded to help with Vinfast's push into electric scooters and e-buses in India.
At the same time, Vingroup has signed an MoU with the Telangana government outlining a major investment to create a broader ecosystem across smart urban development, electric mobility, renewable energy, healthcare, education, tourism and charging infrastructure. The plan also includes deploying a large electric taxi fleet and a mobility-as-a-service platform through the group's Green and Smart Mobility arm.
On the product side, Vinfast already sells electric two-wheelers, buses and cars globally, but its India entry began with two all-electric SUVs, the VF 6 and VF 7. Promeet noted that this aligns with Indian buyer behaviour, where customers are open to new technology but expect proven safety, strong design, dependable performance and credible after-sales support.
Both SUVs use lithium iron phosphate battery packs with a claimed range of up to 510 kilometres and support 100 kW DC fast charging, enabling a 10-70 per cent charge in roughly 25 minutes. They also feature Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems, connected infotainment, intelligent battery management and over-the-air update capability. Styling by Italian style gurus, Torino Design, gives both models a distinctly global look intended to appeal across markets.
Building the ownership ecosystem is already underway. Vinfast currently operates 45 dealerships across India and plans to expand to 75 outlets in the next phase. Partnerships with Castrol, MyTVS and Roadgrid are intended to provide service, maintenance and roadside assistance nationwide.
With its base in India coming along nicely, Vinfast plans to expand its lineup in the subcontinent with more cars as well electric scooters and e-buses, which it confirmed during Promeet's visit to the Vinfast Hai Phong production facility.
Local production will play a key role in tailoring Vinfast's vehicles to Indian conditions, from high temperature differences and varied road surfaces to local charging habits. Manufacturing within the country also creates a platform for tailored future updates, and localisation along with the potential of exports.
DriveSpark's Thoughts About Vinfast's Plans For India
Vinfast's approach in India sees it combine massive manufacturing investment and targeted product launches with long-term ecosystem development under the wider umbrella of Vingroup. The electric automotive giant from Vietnam is here to play the long game as it looks to make our EV market its own and from what we've seen till now, the future looks bright for Vinfast in India.
