Toyota To Discontinue Innova Crysta Diesel by 2027: End of an Era?

Toyota is planning to discontinue its iconic Innova Crysta MPV and replace it with a more affordable Innova Hycross Hybrid. This comes as a shock to many Innova enthusiasts, as the model continues to enjoy strong demand in the MPV segment. The upcoming CAFE 3 norms are the primary reason behind this major decision.

Toyota To Discontinue Innova Crysta MPV

Japanese automaker Toyota is expected to phase out the Innova Crysta diesel from early 2027. The new emission norms and regulations will make it more difficult for the model to comply. Toyota has long been known for its diesel engines, which offer exceptional reliability, efficiency, and peace of mind for customers.

With the brand's strong expertise in hybrid technology, the Crysta is set to be replaced by the Innova Hycross Hybrid, which is already on sale. Code-named 840D, this more accessible version of the Hycross will bridge the gap for customers seeking reliability, efficiency, and the same level of comfort offered by the Innova Crysta.

Not just Toyota, but several other manufacturers like Tata Motors, Mahindra, Hyundai, and Kia-who currently offer diesel powertrains-will face challenges complying with the upcoming CAFE 3 norms, set to be implemented from April 1, 2027. These norms aim to reduce average fuel consumption to 3.02 litres per 100 km by 2032 while ensuring improved environmental sustainability. This makes continuing diesel models like the Innova Crysta increasingly difficult.

Diesel Cars Still In Demand

However, diesel vehicles continue to enjoy strong demand in India, with buyers willing to pay a premium for their efficiency and long-term reliability. Brands like Mahindra and Tata still see high demand for diesel variants despite offering petrol and EV alternatives. Toyota, in particular, has mastered the art of building highly reliable diesel engines known to last for decades.

The Innova Crysta is one among them which has earned immense trust among Indian buyers and remains one of the best-selling MPVs in the country. It is the only vehicle in its segment built on a ladder-frame chassis and powered by a 2.4-litre diesel engine, offering a perfect balance of power, fuel efficiency, durability, and smooth driving experience. Its exit from the Indian market will leave a large void that may not be filled even by its hybrid sibling, at least for the next few years.
