Top 10 Carmakers: May 2026 Car Sales - Maruti Sets Record, Tata Pips Mahindra
India's passenger vehicle market posted strong year-on-year gains in May 2026, with Maruti Suzuki recording its highest-ever monthly domestic sales of 1,90,337 units. Tata Motors retained second place at 59,090 units, finishing just 1,069 units ahead of Mahindra, as its EV sales crossed the 10,000-unit mark for the first time .
Kia India clocked its best-ever May sales performance at 27,586 units, while Nissan's domestic wholesales surged 117.7 percent year on year to 2,948 units. Let's take a look at the top 10 carmakers of May 2026...

1) Maruti Suzuki
Maruti Suzuki's May tally of 1,90,337 units, up 40 percent year on year, is its highest-ever monthly domestic sales figure. Small cars including the Alto K10, Wagon R and S-Presso contributed 81,555 units, while SUVs accounted for 79,267 units.
The nation's largest carmaker announced a price increase of up to Rs 30,000 across select models from June 2026, citing rising input costs. Maruti is also set to showcase India's first flex-fuel passenger vehicle on June 4.
2) Tata Motors
Tata Motors posted 59,090 domestic passenger vehicle sales in May, up 42.2 percent year on year. Second place was retained ahead of Mahindra, though the gap between the two narrowed to just over 1,000 units.
Vehicle registrations grew more than 50 percent year on year during the month, and Tata's EV sales crossed the 10,000-unit mark for the first time. The recently updated Tiago and Tiago EV brought new design, feature and safety upgrades to the entry-level range.
3) Mahindra
Mahindra registered 58,021 domestic SUV sales in May, up 10.7 percent year on year, finishing just 1,069 units behind Tata Motors. Supply-chain challenges at select suppliers limited volumes, with the Scorpio, Thar, XUV 3XO and XUV 7XO driving the brand's numbers.
4) Hyundai
Hyundai India's domestic sales rose 9.1 percent year on year to 47,837 units in May. The company's cumulative domestic tally for the first two months of FY2027 reached 99,739 units, up 13 percent from the same period last year.
The Creta, Venue and Exter led volumes, with the Grand i10 Nios and i20 contributing steadily. Hyundai also announced a price increase across select models from June 2026, citing rising input costs.
5) Toyota
Toyota sold 30,574 units in May, up 4.4 percent year on year. The carmaker crossed 3,00,000 cumulative strong-hybrid vehicle sales in India during the month, with the Innova Hycross, Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Glanza leading domestic volumes.
6) Kia
Kia India posted 27,586 units in May, up 23.6 percent year on year and the South Korean brand's best-ever May sales performance. The Seltos and Sonet drove demand, with the Carens Clavis and Syros also contributing to the year-on-year growth.
7) MG Motor
JSW MG Motor India recorded 6,048 units in May, down 4.1 percent year on year from 6,304 units in May 2025. The company attributed the dip to global supply-chain disruptions, rising commodity prices and higher freight costs.
MG launched the Majestor SUV during the month of May at a starting price of Rs 40.99 lakh. Positioned above the Gloster, the Majestor now serves as the brand's flagship ICE-powered SUV in India.
8) Honda
Honda India posted 5,111 domestic sales in May, up 29.4 percent year on year from 3,950 units. The Amaze and Elevate supported volumes alongside the updated City, which was launched during the month, while the ZR-V hybrid was showcased as the brand's flagship SUV.
9) Renault
Renault posted 4,113 units in May, up 64 percent year on year from 2,502 units. The recently launched Duster is supporting the brand's recovery, with the Kwid, Kiger and Triber continuing as its core volume models.
10) Nissan
Nissan's domestic wholesales more than doubled in May, rising 117.7 percent year on year to 2,948 units. The Magnite remains the key volume driver, while the recently launched Gravite has added to growth. The Japanese brand is set to unveil the Tekton SUV on July 9.
