Top 10 Car Brands In India (Retail Sales): March 2026 - Maruti, Tata & Mahindra Lead

India's passenger vehicle retail market closed FY26 on a strong note. As per FADA data, total PV retail sales in March 2026 reached 4,40,144 units - a 21.48 per cent jump year-on-year over 3,62,304 units in March 2025, and an 11.49 per cent rise month-on-month over the 3,94,768 units sold in February 2026.

Strong SUV demand, along with the continued uptake of CNG and electric vehicles, drove the growth. For the full financial year FY26, PV retail sales stood at 47,05,056 units, up 13 per cent (5,41,129 units) over the 41,63,927 units sold in FY25. Now, let's take a look at the top 10 carmakers for March 2026 as per the retail sales data released by FADA.

1. Maruti Suzuki

Maruti Suzuki was once again the runaway leader in March 2026, selling 1,72,814 units. Maruti's sales grew 28.58 per cent year-on-year, adding 38,408 units over the 1,34,406 units it sold in March 2025.

Maruti's Month-on-month sales climbed 12.15 per cent from 1,54,095 units in February, a gain of 18,719 units. For FY26, Maruti closed the year with 18,68,386 units and a 39.71 per cent market share, making it by far the largest of any carmaker in the country.

2. Tata Motors

Tata Motors held on to second place with 65,784 units in March 2026, posting one of the strongest growth numbers in the top five. Year-on-year, Tata's PV sales grew 35.74 per cent, adding 17,322 units over the 48,462 units it sold in March 2025.

Month-on-month, Tata's sales were up 16.54 per cent from the 56,447 units in February, a gain of 9,337 units. For FY26, Tata Motors closed at 6,13,513 units, which made it the third-best-selling carmaker for the period.

3. Mahindra

Mahindra continued its strong run with 61,029 units sold in March 2026. Mahindra grew 31.83 per cent year-on-year, adding 14,732 units over the 46,297 units it sold in March 2025.

Month-on-month, Mahindra's sales were up 14.54 per cent from 53,281 units in February, a gain of 7,748 units. For FY26, Mahindra finished second overall with 6,31,638 units sold.

4. Hyundai

South Korean carmaker Hyundai recorded 48,791 units in March 2026, growing 14.77 per cent year-on-year over 42,511 units in March 2025, a gain of 6,280 units. Month-on-month, Hyundai added 3,176 units over February's 45,615 units, a rise of 6.96 per cent.

For FY26, Hyundai recorded 5,78,337 units, having been pushed back to fourth place for the full year by both Mahindra and Tata.

5. Kia

Kia posted 28,108 units in March 2026, growing a solid 27.78 per cent year-on-year over 21,997 units in March 2025, a gain of 6,111 units. Month-on-month, the South Korean carmaker was up 12.29 per cent from 25,031 units in February, adding 3,077 units. For FY26, Kia posted 2,79,363 units.

6. Toyota

Toyota registered 27,533 units in March 2026, growing 18.03 per cent year-on-year over 23,328 units in March 2025, a gain of 4,205 units. Month-on-month growth was more modest for the Japanese carmaker, up 4.32 per cent from the 26,392 units sold in February, a gain of 1,141 units. For FY26, Toyota posted 3,35,321 units.

7. Skoda VW India

Skoda VW India, the Indian arm of the Volkswagen Group was the only brand in the top 10 to post a year-on-year decline. The German car conglomerate sold 8,765 units in March 2026, down from 9,504 units in March 2025, a loss of 739 units (-7.78% YoY).

On a month-on-month basis, however, the recovery was strong for Skoda VW India, with sales up 15.10 per cent from the 7,615 units sold in February, a gain of 1,150 units. For FY26, Skoda registered strong growth, posting a total of 1,10,070 units.

8. JSW MG Motor India

JSW MG Motor India sold 6,269 units in March 2026, growing 21.33 per cent year-on-year over the 5,167 units in March 2025, a gain of 1,102 units. Month-on-month growth was the sharpest in the top 10, with sales up 37.84 per cent from 4,548 units in February, adding 1,721 units. For FY26, MG Motor posted 66,080 units.

9. Honda

Honda posted 5,528 units in March 2026, growing 12.17 per cent year-on-year over 4,928 units in March 2025, a gain of 600 units. Month-on-month, the Japanese marque was up 15.79 per cent from 4,774 units in February, adding 754 units. For FY26, Honda saw a decline to 60,826 units, reflecting the broader challenge the brand has faced in a market increasingly dominated by SUVs.

10. Renault
Renault rounded out the top 10 with 3,594 units in March 2026. The French marque was among the stronger performers in the month, growing 36.50 per cent year-on-year over 2,633 units in March 2025, a gain of 961 units.

Month-on-month, Renault's sales were up 10.65 per cent from the 3,248 units sold in February, adding 346 units. For FY26, Renault posted marginal growth to post 39,060 units.
