Tesla Model S & Model X To Be Discontinued: Plans To Focus On AI & Humanoid Robots
One of the world's leading electric car manufacturers, Tesla, is reportedly preparing to phase out its flagship Model S and Model X as it moves towards self-driving technology and AI-powered robotics. According to reports, production of both models could come to an end as early as next quarter, a major strategic shift for the company.
Why is Tesla Ending Model X and Model S?
The Model S and Model X were among Tesla's earliest electric cars and played a key role in establishing the brand in the highly competitive global automotive market. For a decade, these models represented Tesla's EV leadership worldwide.

With their planned discontinuation, the company is moving towards a future centred around autonomous driving and artificial intelligence. Reports suggest that the production facilities and technologies used for the Model S and Model X could be used for Tesla's humanoid robot project, Optimus.
Tesla has repeatedly indicated that its long-term vision lies in AI, robotics, and self-driving technology, making the discontinuation of the ageing Model S and Model X programmes a strategic shift.

Despite being the oldest models in Tesla's portfolio, the Model S and Model X contribute only a small share of overall sales. For example, the Model 3 and Model Y together accounted for an estimated 97% of Tesla's global sales in 2025.
In India, Tesla offers only the Model Y priced at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom), while the long-range variant is priced at ₹67.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Tesla is now focusing on the Optimus humanoid robot project, which is designed to perform everyday human tasks.

The Optimus project has now reached its third generation and production level capability. With the discontinuation of the Model S and Model X, Tesla believes it can utilise existing production lines to make robots and targets to manufacture up to one million Optimus robots annually. Powered by advanced AI, these humanoid robots are expected to take on unsafe and repetitive tasks while interacting naturally with humans
Beyond Optimus, Tesla is also investing heavily in its in-house AI systems, full self-driving technology, and its flagship space exploration venture, SpaceX. All these align with Elon Musk's vision that, in a future powered by high-level automation, "physical work will be a choice."
