Tesla Plans Budget EV – Smaller, Cheaper & Possibly Driverless
Tesla is reportedly developing a smaller and more affordable electric car to revive its mass-market share, which it has lost to Chinese rivals in recent years. This new EV could feature both human driving capabilities and driverless technology.
Tesla Building More Affordable Compact EV
American electric car manufacturer Tesla is one of the world's leading EV sellers. It played a key role in accelerating the electrification of cars over the past decade. However, the company is now facing intense competition from Chinese automakers such as BYD, Chery, SAIC Motor, and Geely.

Additionally, several European automotive giants, including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, and Porsche, are rapidly expanding their electric vehicle portfolios, further intensifying the competition. Tesla has also seen a notable decline in market share, with BYD emerging as the world's largest EV seller in 2025 despite not operating in the American market.
Tesla's Budget Friendly EV car
Analysing the situation, Tesla is reportedly developing a new compact SUV that will be more affordable than its current models. This upcoming EV will not be based on the Tesla Model 3 or Tesla Model Y, and instead will be built on an entirely new platform, with initial production expected to take place in China.

In the future, production of this vehicle is likely to expand to Europe and Tesla's home market, the United States. Elon Musk had initially planned this low-cost EV in 2024 but later scrapped the program to focus on Robotaxis and humanoid robots.
Now, after losing ground in key markets, Tesla appears to have shifted its focus back to the mass-market segment. This smaller EV could help the company regain market share and expand into new regions where demand for affordable electric vehicles is expected to grow significantly like India.
However, Tesla's long-term vision remains on autonomous driving, which it considers the future of safe mobility. As a result, this upcoming model could be designed as a fully autonomous vehicle, while still offering the option for manual driving. It is also expected to be priced lower than the current Tesla Model 3.
