Tata Motors To Start Jaguar Land Rover Assembly In Chennai — What It Means For Luxury Car Buyers
Tata Motors will begin locally assembling JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) models in India as part of its strategy to expand luxury vehicle production in the domestic market. The company's Chennai facility will begin assembling these premium vehicles from February 9, 2026.
Tata Motors To Assemble JLR units in Chennai
The Chennai plant was announced by the company in 2024, and these JLR vehicles will be the first to utilise this facility. Built with an estimated investment of ₹9,000 crores, the Panapakkam facility is a world-class unit that supports around 5,000 employees and has an annual production capacity of 2,50,000 units.

Currently, the facility will be used only for assembling JLR and high-end Tata vehicles. However, since the plant's capacity exceeds the current Indian market demand, Tata may also utilize it for exports to international markets in the future. With this move, Tata aims to increase its competitiveness in the premium car segment while expanding its luxury vehicle manufacturing footprint in India.
Previously, Tata Motors assembled its JLR vehicles at its Pune plant alongside Tata-branded vehicles. Now, the Chennai plant will be dedicated exclusively to the JLR division of the group. The Range Rover Evoque will be the first vehicle to be assembled at this facility, while the Defender and Velar models are expected to follow later.

It has not yet been confirmed whether all Range Rover models will eventually shift production completely from Pune to Chennai. Currently, most existing facilities are nearing capacity, making the Chennai plant essential to meeting rising demand.
JLR still trails European luxury rivals such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi in overall sales volumes. However, local assembly and production could strengthen its competitiveness in the luxury market. Additionally, with the recent EU-India Free Trade Deal, JLR may benefit from reduced import duties when bringing vehicles from its UK and Slovakia facilities.
Apart from Tata Motors (JLR), manufacturers such as Hyundai Motor, Citroën (Stellantis), BMW Mini, and Renault-Nissan also have production facilities in Chennai. Chennai is widely regarded as a key automotive manufacturing hub due to its strong infrastructure and export connectivity.
